Worried about my DH

NannyState · 16/01/2011 10:33

DH started feeling nauseous and extremely tired yesterday afternoon. We were visiting relatives for lunch and he had to go and have a lie down when we got there. Really unlike him - he is usually very energetic and fights off illnesses.

He has slept poorly all night - tossing and turning, complaining of nausea and pain in his right shoulder, and now on his left side in his mid-lower back. He hasn't been sick, no diaorrhea, we can't trace it back to anything he ahs eaten, as we have all eaten the same thing for the last few days and everyone else is fine. He has been burping huge burps (tmi!) all night and feels nauseous and weak. He is now totally zonked out asleep and I am worried about him.

He is being a typical man 'no doctors, I'll be fine' etc, but the chest / back pain is worrying me. WWYD?

I feel the same :(

Also one of my glands (in my neck) is really inflamed. I'm hoping it's just one of those things going around, but I might call the doctors if I don't feel any better tomorrow.

ChippingIn · 16/01/2011 10:36

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't call NHS direct, we might not have the same thing at all!! If he's normally fighting fit I'd call.

thirtysomething · 16/01/2011 10:37

I would go to A and E (if he really won't go phone NHS direct/out of hours GP for advice and tell hime they told him to go - which I'm pretty certain they will!) it COULD be (and is most likely to be) some form of trapped wind/indigestion but better to be safe than sorry....I'm sure you know a lot of those signs could be first indicators of a heart attack. MUCH better to get checked out today, than to regret it tomorrow. If he isn't prone to digestive issues/indigestion then all the more reason to check it out.

Don't want to worry you but having had a relative with a heart attack (who said it was indigestion) and another with a heart infection (whose symptoms started like that) I would err on the side of caution.

Please let us know how he is when you can.

I diagnose............. KIDNEY STONES
or renal colic at the least. Get him to wee in a jug, look at said wee, is there like a white silky fluff on the surface? Is it slightly tinged pinky> get ye down to the A&E - if you say you think it's Kidney stones or if THEY think at triage that it is, they will whizz him thru.
Nowt so painful as QODney stones

FYI belching constantly, (but not farting) and nausea with one sided back pain....... referred pain in the shoulder .......that was me on the 18th December (oh and I was crying)

theagedparent · 16/01/2011 10:57

I was thinking gallstones.

QODneystones · 16/01/2011 11:03

up to the pain in the left flank is more like Kidney than gall - wikipedia say...

"A characteristic symptom of gallstones is a "gallstone attack", in which a person may experience intense pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, that steadily increases for approximately 30 minutes to several hours. A patient may also experience referred pain between the shoulder blades or below the right shoulder. These symptoms may resemble those of a "kidney stone attack". Often, attacks occur after a particularly fatty meal and almost always happen at night. Other symptoms include abdominal bloating, intolerance of fatty foods, belching, gas and indigestion."

Not quite the right pain area from my understanding - either way - poor sod, sounds like one or the other, A&E will xray and find one or the other I suspect.

Hi all. Thanks for all your advice. Really helpful just to have people to 'talk to' about these things.

I dropped him up at A&E a couple of hours ago (got two little ones, so couldn't stay with him, poor thing). He has had an ECG and is awaiting some blood test results. No word yet on what they think it might be.

I have gallstones myself, and did wonder whether it could be this.

I am worried about his heart, though. He is 46, a bit podgy, very stressed at work at the moment and his dad died in his early 60s from massive stroke, so obviously my worst fear was/is heart attack.

thanks for all your advice/support, though, Much appreciated x

Glad he is there, keep us posted and try not to worry too much

thirtysomething · 16/01/2011 14:14

Glad he is being looked at properly; far better to get checked out than stay at home worrying! Hope he's feeling better soon x

Rindercella · 16/01/2011 14:20

Excellent news he is in hospital and good for him for going to A&E. Really, really important to get these things checked out quickly.

DH was initally mis diagnosed with kidney stones. Only wish that was what he had.

Nanny, hope your DH has nothing to worry about and gets home to you soon. Smile

theagedparent · 16/01/2011 15:44

I hope he is soon better x

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 16/01/2011 18:43

Nannystate - I'm glad he went, please let us know how he gets on.

Rindercella :( (HUGS)

NannyState · 16/01/2011 21:06

Hi all.

He is finally back and OK. Had a bath, some dinner and feeling much much better.

They think it was bad indigestion. The ECG, blood pressure, ultrasound and all bloods came back normal.I am still a bit concerned, though. It was just so unlike him.

He has to go back to the GP for a check-up next week.

It has been a bit of a wake up call, to be honest. We've been discussing a bit of a lifestyle overhaul - less grub and wine, more exercise, finding a way to make sure he de-stresses a bit.

Thanks so much for all your support. Means a lot.

Rindercella, what happened with your DH? Hmm

OP posts:
Rindercella · 16/01/2011 21:55

Ok, really pleased he's been checked out and results all came back ok. That is really good news.

DH walked himself into A&E while waiting for a scan for kidney stones & was found to have very aggressive prostate cancer which had spread to his bones & glands...he had back pain as he had a tumour compressing against his spine. Nearly paralysed him.

Not telling you this to scare you, it's just what happened. And it is why it is soooo bloody important these things are checked out, especially in otherwise healthy men who hardly ever see their GP (DH did keep going to his GP who kept wittering on about bloody kidney stones/infections).

Having said that, I recommend your DH gets an appt with his GP this week and insists on some more thorough investigations. If he has insurance, use that to speed up the process.

So pleased your DH is back home. Keep an eye on him and get yourself some rest - I bet you're exhausted. x

QODneystones · 16/01/2011 22:19

I hope it is all nothing - and yes, wake up call I suppose X

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 17/01/2011 04:21

Nanny - I'm pleased it all seems OK, at this stage anyway. I second what Rindercella said though, push push push for any and all testing. If they give him the 'all clear' keep a good eye on him and send him right back to A&E if anything is out of order. Too many things get missed by busy Drs :(

NannyState · 17/01/2011 19:38

Thanks for sharing your story, Rindercella. That is so awful Sad. How is your DH now? Sad

I am verging on hypochondriac / health anxious, to be honest, as I have had a couple of scares with my own health (that doctors missed Sad) and with my DD (swine flu hideousness - really horrible story that i won't go into now).

I will definitely make sure he sees that doc next week and has the follow up tests. Many, many thanks all x
