traveling/flying with unvaxed baby

I'm still struggling with the decision whether or not to continue vaxinating my dd according to the current UK schedule. she has had her 8 week jabs and that is it so far. she is due her 12 week jabs on tuesday when she will be 16 weeks old. we are traveling a week later.
if it was not for the traveling I would just cancel the appt until I had more time to research or arrange for single vax. we will be travelling through 3 different airports and on 2 planes each way which makes me fear what she might be exposed to (though the countries we are visiting are not on the who list). then again, having her second lot of dtap/hib/polio wont be giving her full immunity so is there much point? will she be more protected with the second dose or was the first enough? I'm just.so worried about her being exposed to so many people from all over in the airports. do they sell baby surgical masks ( joking, but if they did, I would buy one)

If you were happy to give her the first set of jabs, why not give her the 2nd lot? Are you afraid she'll be ill during the journey, or are you concerned that the jabs are a bad idea in the first place?

DH & I developed a bad cough at the end of a long-haul flight (our fully vaxxed 14 month old never got the cough). My cough cleared up after 4 weeks, but DH's rumbled on until it was bad enough to be diagnosed as pneumonia, the culprit bacteria being HIb. We can't know if DH caught the HIb on the plane, but it seems likely.

lljkk · 16/01/2011 10:54

I neglected to say that DH was coughing almost non stop by the time he was dx with pneumonia, he had 4 weeks off work and 3 lots of antibiotics to clear the HIb. HIb is a big deal to me, now.
Can you even get a single jab for HIb, pertussis, etc.?

chillichill · 16/01/2011 10:57

I would rather get the single jabs but not enough time before journey.
I'm concerned about the 5 in 1 after dd had a moderate reaction to it (unconsoulable crying for an hour and onset if colic type symptoms after)

Well, they are supposed to have some reaction -- it's meant to strongly stimulate their immune system. Would be strange if they never had a noticeable response.

And if she responded that strongly last time she's unlikely to respond much next time (since it already did a good job of stimulating the immune system).

As reactions go, that's pretty mild or maybe just about moderate, to be honest.

Good luck, whatever you decide. Friends few many times longhaul with their unvaxxed child under 3yo, never a bad illness picked up.

Hib is a bastard. WHen you have watched your tiny baby on a ventilator, having a LP for meningitis, believe me, you would be demanding vaccines.

I'd go for the second booster, for sure.

lljkk · 16/01/2011 11:13

Friends flew many times, I meant, Blush

bubbleymummy · 16/01/2011 18:00

Are you breastfeeding? That offers protection against Hib. Personally I wouldn't be concerned about postponing the vaccines until you've had a chance to research your decision. The timeframes are a guideline only. The travel wouldn't bother me either - you could just as easily pick something up on the bus or train!

I am bfeeding and plan to get a flu jab myself in order to pass some immunity on to dd. wish I could filter all her jabs that way. I was planning on getting her the menC at her appt but delaying the 5 in 1 but I am concerned about hib and whooping cough. I just keep going back and forth in ny head.
I do have plenty of hand sanitizer and a pack of detol wipes ready for the plane.

Hand sanitizer and dettol surely wont protect against the things the vaccinations are meant to protect from.
