What sort of contraception do you use?

plantsitter · 14/01/2011 16:44

And do you like it?

Sorry for personal question, but I'm deciding what contraception to use after years of only using condoms and accidentally just having had DD2.

I was thinking about the implant thingy but wondered what the others were like. I've never been on the pill or owt.

Thanks in advance

It's ver much an individual thing. I was on the pill between my two dc, and never had any problems at all. Now I'm back on it and it makes me feel rough as hell, nauseous and dizzy, so I'm looking into non hormonal contraception. I'll probably end up with the copper coil I think. I like the idea of the implant but everyone I know who has it (5 or 6 of my friends) has had horrifically heavy, non stop bleeding on it. The only thing I liek about the pill really is that if it doesn't agree with me I can just stop and try another. Not really that simple with a coil or an implant, but needs must I guess.

BooBooGlass · 14/01/2011 16:50

'Ver much'??
Not really that posh, honest guv

ChildofIsis · 14/01/2011 16:53

We always used condoms preDD.

I was determined not to have anymore dcs, and wanted something fool-proof.

Now I have a mirena coil, fantastic, no periods, no problem.

plantsitter · 14/01/2011 17:30

Ooh no periods with the mirena coil? I didn't know that.

I've heard bad things about the implant but they were mood related - not about the bleeding.

Thanks for replies.

5m old co-sleeping insatiable breast-feeding up every hour DS

I'd recommend it as a method of contraception, VERY reliable

Condoms here- we have never used anything else. DH is considering a vasectomy.

This one and it surprisingly works.

It's a very personal thing though.

mirena, and yes i like it. just wanted something i didn't have to think about, it's in and it does its job. big plus having no periods too!

PlentyOfParsnips · 15/01/2011 15:35

I used a diaphragm for a couple of years after DC2 and got on very well with it. Then I opted for sterilisation and have been very happy with that too.

YusMilady · 15/01/2011 15:41

Sterilisation. Best decision I ever made.

DivineInspiration · 15/01/2011 15:46

I have a copper coil, and I like it a lot. However, I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't experienced noticeably heavier or more painful periods with it. I know that's an issue for a lot of women who have a copper coil and puts some women off trying it, although it's very individual as to the extent of the increase in pain/bleeding.

I know so many women who haven't got on with the pill or other hormonal methods (depression, weight gain, loss of libido) that I'm almost disbelieving anybody finds them good!

mamalovesmojitos · 15/01/2011 15:48

Implant. Find it fab. Not in a sexual relationship now though, think if I was i would also use condoms. Definitely don't want to be pregnant, but in 20s so feel too young for sterilisation.

cabbageroses · 15/01/2011 19:10

I have used pill, diaphram, condoms and IUD - now too old for any.

If i was young again I'd go for the pill any time. if you are in good health, don't smoke, etc you can stay on it safely up to age 50 now they say.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 15/01/2011 19:16

Mirena here. I like it. Occasional light spotting but no proper periods.

Used to be on the combined pill until I had DC2, after 2 under two I was happy to go for a long term contraceptiveGrin And I am too tired to remember a pill every day plus I am a bit old and a dirty smoker

whatanumpty · 15/01/2011 19:29

plantsitter, I was in precisely the same situation as you. I went for a copper coil and although no periods due to breastfeeding it's fab not to have any horrid hormone side effects and to be able to forget about condoms.

cabbageroses · 15/01/2011 19:33

It is worth noting that the copper coil is not 100% effective.

I know of people who got PG with it.

My friend is her mother's 4th child and a copper-coil failure!

I do know someone who had a coil but doubled up with condoms mid-cycle.

whatanumpty · 15/01/2011 19:54

Yes but no method is 100% effective. Given that in the last 4 years of using condoms I've had two pregnancies, I'm happy to give the coil a whirl Grin

cabbageroses · 15/01/2011 20:04

what happened with the condoms- did they tear or did you not use 100% of the time?

plantsitter · 17/01/2011 11:24

Thanks for these replies - good info to think about.

As for condoms, they are great if you use them... but I got pregnant the DAY after my period thinking it would be safe. Obviously it wasn't a huge disaster or we would've been more careful, but I really don't want that to happen again (though frankly I'm not sure how anyone has time to conceive number 3).

Bear in mind the mirena coil does contain artificial hormones, so can have all the undesirable side effects that these sorts of contraception produce in the unlucky few (eg mood changes, acne, weight gain, migraines). I think the theory is that this is supposed to be less likely in the mirena coil than with the contraceptive pill, because of very low levels of hormone and slow, constant release, but I know some people who have had very severe reactions to the mirena coil - enough to have seriously put me off the idea (eg one who had to have investigations to check her symptoms were not minor strokes, as after insertion of the coil she started getting episodes of slurred speech, confusion and loss of use of one arm - never having had migraines prior to this point in her life).

LornMowa · 17/01/2011 16:38

Late teens and early 20's used the combined pill. Didn't like it much. I seemed to get thrush every other week and once got a heart palpitation which scared me.

Then I found out about the Billings method and have used it for the last 16 years. It helped when I was TTC and when I wasn't. I started by recording everything v. carefully but then got wise to the symptoms and realised I could just "tell" when I was ovulating. On the rare times when not sure whether it was safe or not, we practice non penetrative sex which keeps things more interesting anyway.

I often think it is sad the amount of money that is spent, perhaps unnecessarily, on contraceptives. Having said that, I realise that not everyone is in the secure type relationship that I am very lucky to have.

KatieScarlett2833 · 17/01/2011 16:39

I find "fuck off" to be an effective contraceptive.
