UV thingie for coldsores

Anyone tried them?

Have just bought the Boots own brand one and am going to give it a whirl. I only ever get them in one place and it claims that it will eventually get rid of them completely after 3 or 4 cycles.

I am distinctly dubious but hell it's worth a try. Tingling started yesterday morning so am a bit behind the curve but have had a compeed patch on since them so the blister is just starting to form. If it reduced the length even by a bit, I would be delighted.

So first zap in the loos coming up.

Ooh i would be very interested in seeing if this works.

Coldsores are so loathsome aren't they.

FreeButtonBee · 14/01/2011 13:37

Utterly. It's the pain that I can't stand - that and no kissing Sad

Right, first zap done - well it feels like nothing is happening at all. It's a wee box about the size of a stapler with a hollow end. You press a button, a wee light starts flashing on the side and you put the hollow end over the coldsore. Sit like a idiot for 3 mins and then it turns off.

If you've never tried them, the compeed patches (or I see Boots do their own brand now too) are very good. They stop you touching the coldsore and I am defo a scab picker so just. could. not. help. myself. with coldsores. Less pain cos not in the air as well. And less chance of infecting others which I am always worried about cos they are so horrible. Am using this gizmo in conjunction with the patches.

Will rezap this pm and in the morning as well. Apparently you can zap as much as you like but twice in first 24 hrs if you get it early or 4 times a day if you get to it late. So I think I am on the 4 times routine.

it hasnt got rid of dh's but it has reduced the severity and frequency of them substantially

FreeButtonBee · 14/01/2011 14:52

really OYBBK. That would do me. I am not over run with the buggers - not really more than 1 a year. But I do hate them and they take ages to heal so shorter duration would be amazing...

I only get one a year as well - but always in the same place.

It would be wonderful to get rid of them.

BlackSwan · 14/01/2011 15:13

Take Lysine, which is just a protein, & zinc asap - halts them in their tracks.

FreeButtonBee · 14/01/2011 15:59

BS, I do take Lysine supps when I get one - sadly doesn't stop them for me. I am very run down at the mo - very bad cold just before christmas plus nausea bug this week, so immune system not v happy.

GOML - we are coldsore buddies! [vomit]

second Zn & vit Bs

BlackSwan · 14/01/2011 17:38

FBB - nausea bug hit me at 5pm! I blame you!! How long is this for??

FreeButtonBee · 14/01/2011 17:59

ouch; mine was 24 hrs of hell (rolling over in bed set me off, had to get off tube and do some VERY deep breathing on platform etc)

Still a bit weak at the knees now, three days later and off my food (oh look, there's a pig!) but better than I was!

I very much feel your pain.

Just downed a stemitil i managed to beg from the dr last time i got this (which was in December, tell me is that fair?).

Hate being sick, but the worst is taking care of yourself and sick DCs. DS has had it last few days.

FreeButtonBee · 17/01/2011 11:08

Right, have been zapping away all weekend (abotu 4 times a day) plus taking Lysine plus using the coldsore patches.

First tingle was on Thursday morning; first blister, friday morning.

This morning it's looking much better than it normally would at this stage. the blister is much less full and the skin underneath seems to be new skin that's ready to heal, rather than about explode into new blisteriness.

I normally have horrible blisters for at least a week (even using the patches) and then it takes another 3-4 days to heal down to a light scab/slightly dry patch. So I think that something is helping.

Interestingly, the area has been much more tingly than normal - don't know whether that is a good or bad side. I am hoping it's a sign that my immune system is kicking virus butt.

Will see how it looks tomorrow and update again.
