anyone had cancerous moles and if so...

Did they come back?

I had a mole removed from my face some 4 years ago - it had been there a while and I knew it was a cancer but once pregnant ensured I got it dealt with.

I've had a few other suspect bits and bobs removed since - they were fine.

Last night I found a brand new shiny mole between my toes - got gp appointment today - will refer quickly.

I'm bricking it as it was really hard to get anyone to take me seriously with the first (cancerous) mole due to my colouring and racial background and age and general thick oily skin. OK - one on the face could be one-off due to exposure to hot sun as kid. But between the toes? Sun doesn't shine there.

A anyone with similar experiences?

If you have already had one melanoma removed, then unfortunatly you are at much higher risk of developing more. And though sun exposure increases your risk of a melanoma, you can get them anywhere.

I hope they sort it out easily and quickly

Thanks cmo - I'm feeling a bit low - probably unreasonably at this stage. I'm thinking of going private as I find it shocking that given I've had a carcinoma already but since discharged from hospital I'm not nbeing fast-tracked this time.

Oh but just seen your post - what I had was a carcinoma (not melanoma.

Oh a BCC/SCC ? Same thing applies, but as they only ever spread locally, there isn't a huge rush to treat them

giveitago · 14/01/2011 16:58

OK that's good to know except the first one was on my face (long gone) and this on is toes. I'm sure I'll get an appointment soon to get rid.

I had a melanoma about 20 years ago and thankfully haven't had anymore. Personally if I found another one I would go private as it took about 8 weeks to get my results back after another mole was removed here in the UK.

The first one was diagnosed and treated within a week but this was in the States. I would probably be dead if it had been here on the NHS.

Carcinoma is the less serious one yes?

giveitago · 14/01/2011 17:58

Yup carcinoma is less serious - got to say mine was gone in a week. But I'm just a bit surprised that this absolutely new mole is not being prioritised given my history and given it's in a place that's considered not good.

I will go private.

My DD had a supicious mole - we had a hospital appt within 2 days. I was amazed and they said they treat skin cancer really seriously and hope to catch everyone really soon. it turned out it was a tumour :( - but they removed it and analysed it and it turned out not to be cancerous at that stage.

So I don't know whether she just got fast-tracked because she was a child, or whether it was obvious to teh GP it was a tumour not just a dodgy-looking mole, but I was under the impression that everyone was seen very quickly.

giveitago · 15/01/2011 13:17

Oh nappy - so glad your dd is OK now. I guess they fast tracked as she is a child.

I was fast tracked first time round but not this time. I'm sure it will be fine.

CMOT you can in some instances have further spread from a Squamous cell carcinoma but not a basal. HTH, Giveitago I hope your new thing is nothing but you are wise to get it seen to.

Good luck.

I had a malignant melonoma on my bum cheek 4 years ago attributed to years of UV treatment on the nhs. I was already known to dermatolgy and it was removed there and then at my regular clinic appointment. Result was back in 8 days so they rexcised the area.

I have had others removed since then which gave all been ok thankfully.

They do take these seriously in my experience and I can't fault the care I recieved.

Hth

I had a keratoacanthoma removed from my face a few years ago.. once the GP referred me it was a week til the appointment and when I was seen at the hospital they told me to wait 20m (instant diagnosis Keratoacanthomas look horrid) and removed it there and then..

I was very impressed..and relived...!

CMOTdibbler · 15/01/2011 19:05

Cabbage - I have seen those, but only when the original has been left a very long time. Nothing like the ability of a melanoma to met though

CabbagefromaBaby · 15/01/2011 19:41

Tell me about it. Sad

Sorry to assume you didn't know. I just wanted to clarify for others etc.

capricornqueen · 17/01/2011 11:05

I know its easy to say but really try not to worry, you are in good hands I'm sure. I had a mole on my calf around 5 years ago, I'd actually noticed it a couple of years earlier but it somewhat changed during my first pregnancy. I have visited my GP a couple of times pre-pregnancy about it but he just kept telling me it was nothing to worry about, just an ordinary mole. It was only when I went to my GP for my 6 week post natal check that I made a fuss and said I wanted it removed, it had become irregular around the edges etc. I got an appointment at the hospital and as soon as the consultant saw it I could tell it was going to be bad news. He made an excuse saying he'd had cancellation and could remove it for me there and then but stupidly I panicked as I had my baby daughter with me and hadnt even told anyone where I'd gone, didnt want to worry anyone. Anyway, i went back two days later, had it removed and sure enough it was a malignant melanoma. I had another operation a couple of weeks later to remove more tissue from my leg, tests on my glands, xray on my lungs etc to see if had spread, and thank the lord it hadnt. I was lucky. I have visited my GP since all this and you could see the relief on his face that he'd referred me (it was a different GP that the one who had originally fobbed me off many times). So the moral of my story, dont let any bugger fob you off! You are entitled to a second opinion too. Ive found that, as I've had it before, any suspect marks are looked at straight away, a CMOTdibbler says, I'm more likely to develop another, I've had one quickly removed from my arm but it turned out non malignant :)
Anyway, sorry to waffle on....good luck with it, if in doubt just have it removed, its only a day or so discomforts and you'll have peace of mind at least xx
