SPD after pregnancy

Hi,

I had SPD from about 37 weeks pregnant and went through the usual physio for 6 months after having my baby, but I am still suffering with pains in my legs 15 months after pregnancy. Does anyone know if this is common, or should my doctor be referring me for more treatment??

Hi, you're not alone, I am the same, but I had it from around 20 weeks and it was severe. I am now 10 months PP and I am only just beginning to feel pain free most of the time. For the last 10 months I have rested as much as I can, took stairs one foot at a time and got into cars bum first etc etc.
I have just finished seeing a physio and she is happy that my pelvis is retaining a more balanced position. It's been a long trek.

I would say that you could go to the Dr and ask for more physio (one who is familiar with SPD/PGP), but it's been being very careful and not doing too much walking or other painful movements that I have received the most benefit from. It's only in the last few months that I can push a trolley and go food shopping!

What did you phsyio say about your condition?

JaneB61 · 13/01/2011 21:37

Thanks for the advice. Phyio was happy to release me after five months, and I was off crutches within 3 after birth but it still has not got back to normal and am beginning to think it never will.

Where do you live Jane?

I can recommend a (private) physio in Cardiff. I saw her for nearly a year after having ds2. I've not seen her for ages now and things are good.

I had very specific stretching and strengthening exercises to do, which in conjunction with not pushing ds in his pushchair too far and still being careful in and out of the car, bed, bath etc seems to have paid off.

Hey Jane, just checking on you, hoping you are still seeing the thread.

IWish is there any chance you could describe the exercises so that I might try them too? I feel so tight-legged for not having done much of anything in the last year. Although I'm relatively pain free I still have to watch it and am a bit scared to do any stretches.....

hi all,

Thanks for the tips. I am in Kent, so Cardiff is too far but thinking of seeing another recommended physio soon. Saying that, this week seems to have been a good week. Swimming and Pilates appears to have helped, along with proper posture and getting in / out of car, so lets hope it continues.

Jane, glad to hear from you. I've been on another few threads and have received some good advice from other MN'ers:

I'm about to look for a private physio to see if this can tip the scales in my favour so to speak! Good Luck x

A good chiropractor will do wonders too. I went in on crutches and an hour later carried them out. Still took lots of physio too though, but helped tons.
