Contraception at 40 plus

Hi,
My friend is 48 and has come out of a nasty divorce, 2 years ago. She went to her doctor and asked for contraception - as she has just started to see a new man. The doctor (young /female) laughed and said 'What are the chances of YOU becoming pregnant!' My friend said she did not know to cry, walk out or slap her face. She told her doctor 'Well the chances are very slim, but I do not want to have an abortion a few months from now, Sods law and all that, so what do you advise?'
She was really angry, she also asked the doctor to put it in writing that she would not ever conceive. The doctor got stroppy.
Has this happened to anyone else?

No, but I did get warned a couple of months ago by my GP that there was still a chance I could get pregnant despite showing signs of ovarian failure and turning 48 next month. I would change GP.

(Plus I wasn't using contraception in my mid 40s due to thinking the chances of conceiving were remote and have a 3 yr old to show how wrong I was Smile)

GP obviously not a Guardian reader - there is a column by someone who just had a baby aged 48!
