I think I have an ear infection, I have been given antibiotics by the doctor, but am in quite a bit of pain. I am also 9 weeks pregnant, paracetemol not working very well. Any suggestions.?

Nothing really...but I always remember when I was younger my Mum would wrap a hot water bottle in a big fluffy towell and would hold it against my ear to ease the pain. HTH...hope you feel better soon and good luck with the pregnancy

oh you poor thing. I saw your other thread earlier! Sorry to see it was an ear infection.

Whenever my kids have this, I do what Button's mum did and wrap a luke warm hot water bottle up in a towel and then lie them down so the bottle is on the bed and their ear on top of it. It always seems to make them feel better.

It's so miserable being ill, especially when you're pregnant.

Have you got any lemon to make a hot lemon drink? That may help you feel better. Hopefully the antibs will kick in soon.

Ok, will try hot water bottle. Have made an emergency appointment with acupuncturist for tomorrow.

I think I did have sinusitis which is what landed me in hospital, has now turned into possible ear infection. Have heard this can happen.

i had an awful ongoing ear infection when i was pg with dd, though it was later on in my pregnancy. i took codydramol i think. however, as you're less than 12 weeks i suspect there isn't much you can take apart from paracetamol. hope you feel better soon.

Lonelywitch · 03/10/2005 19:55

Sympathies from me to you. I had sinusitis very badly when I was about 9 weeks pg with ds3. I am allergic to penicillin and the other drugs that would have knocked it on the head you can't take when pg so I was ill for a long time. I can remember the pain but can't remember what I was allowed to take for it. The hot water bottle sounds a good idea for your ear - useless for my sinuses!

AM not in so much pain any more but my ears feel very blocked. There is a horrible pressurised feeling in my head as well. Like when you are flying at low altitude. Have been googling, maybe it is Glue ear. I am going to go back to GP next week if no improvement. Anyone else experienced this.? I certainly cant work in this state. Dont know what to do.

It took weeks and weeks for this feeling to go when I had an ear infection over Christmas. Because all the "gunk" is thick, it is, I'm told, quite difficult to shift.

TheRtHonBaronessEnidOBE · 07/10/2005 13:39

can you do a facial steam thing?

bowl of boiling water with a few drops of tea tree/lavender and breathe in with a towel over head? Might help shift it

cori · 07/10/2005 13:54

I tried that a couple of days ago, it helped but not for very long. Have read that Echinacea is useful, it seems to quite safe in pregnancy. Any one else used it?

I was prescribed Cocodamol when I was suffering from SPD at 18wks pg. Don't know if its safe in the 1st trimester though.

Warm a little olive oil by putting some in a cup inside another cup of hot (not boiling) water. It only wants to be comfortably warm. Then use a medicine pipette to drip a couple of drops into your ear. Rub on and around your ear for a minute to help ease the oil towards the eardrum, then do the same for the other ear. If you do the other ear too soon the oil will just run out of the first ear. Do this every evening for as long as you need. It's very soothing, and will release any crusty stuff that may have built up as a result of the infection.

Hope you feel better soon. I had mild sinusitis and earache at the begining of one pregnancy, and it is a real b*gger.

PrettyCandles · 07/10/2005 14:01

Oh, and carry on with the steaming, every day if you can.

cori · 07/10/2005 15:30

Fangache, am not in so much pain any more, and am allergic to codeine so wouldnt be able to take that. I will try the olive oil thing, thanks.

Hmmm... I was told not to put anything like oil in my ears (after I'd already done it though!!) Don't know about you, but all my conjestion was the other side of my ear drum so nothing really got there to help it, not even the steam although that helped whilst I was actually steaming
