Should I avoid groups with my 10 wk old?

Hi im a new mum and was really looking forward to attending some baby groups with my 10 wk old son for the first time this week (tomorrow)! We also have a family birthday party to attend with lots of local kids on Saturday but Im now wondering whether to avoid both due to the Swine Flu.

I wouldnt be as bothered but i live in a litle village where 2 ppl have died in the past week from it (one of whom was a mother of one aged 50). Now consdering there have been 50 deaths in the uk so far and 2 were on my doorstep should i avoid taking my little babe out and about at the mo.

What do u think?

Personally I would avoid these groups for a little while, others will say otherwise but you cant be too sure. I am debating the vaccine at the moment as i am pregnant and have been in all week ( i am potty training my 2 and half yesr old so thought i would combine the two)

Its very hard as you can easily get it at the supermarket or from a visitor but restricting yourself may help while it settles down. I dont know, its very hard and i keep getting upset about it too. When can babies now be vaccinated?

It seems very high 2 people have died in your village, where is this then?. With this info im not surprised you are cautious...

hi thanks for your reply.

I did end up taking him to the group this morning Im not sure I did the right thing but it was only a small group and we both enjoyed ourselves.

The reason for my decision is that my husband wasnt happy about me wanting to miss my nephew's birthday so i figured if i have to attend a kids birthday then i may as well go to group too. Ill be really upset if he gets it now and i know ill blame myself. I didnt see anyone with sniffles and kept my son on my knee the whole time so here is hoping.

yes it is wierd that 2 ppl have died from it it was in our local newspaper. We live in hoghton, preston lancashire. Its really sad especially as the lady was so young and otherwise healthy.

good luck with potty training and your pregnancy.

did u get vaccine yourself? cos if so and you are BFing you will protect the little one. my Gp actually vaccinated me after I had the baby partly for this reason. My newborn is 4 weeks old and it is very hard to limit contact with other kids due to 3 older siblings but in general I am trying to stick to the outdoors (long walks) rather than indoors. maybe you could persuade other new mums to join you?

Hi,

No I didnt get offered the vaccine and as swine flu had pretty much cleared up whilst I was pregnant they probably didnt think I required it. Its only since my son's birth its headline news again.

However my sister in law told me today she is going to get her 3 yr old vaccinated next week as they sent her a letter from our GP last yr offering it to him. Im wondering now If they would allow my son to have it too as Im with same GP. Im sure i read somewhere tho they only offer it to over 1's.

Good luck with keeping your newborn healthy it must be hard with older children. I know my niece kissed my sons hand tonight after school and I was feeling a little uneasy. Hate having to worry so much about things that would otherwise be enjoyable.

I did BF for first 6 weeks but due to my sons reflux and medication I struggled to continue.
