Swelling/water retention with painkillers?

I have the flu at the moment and for the last three days, I've been pretty much constantly on paracetamol and ibuprofen to keep the fever down.

This morning I noticed that my hands were quite swollen - so much so that I couldn't remove my rings (normally I can do this relatively easily). My thighs are quite swollen too. I got on the scales and I've put on about 4 or 5 pounds, all of a sudden.

I'm presuming it has to be water retention, seeing as I've not had much of an appetite over the past few days (so hopefully it's not just extra blubber!)

I can only attribute it to the painkillers. Is this possible? Has anyone else ever had this?

The only time I remember this happening before was when I had appendicitis - for a few days after I was really swollen and put it down to the general anaesthetic. Now I'm wondering if it was the painkillers I was prescribed at the time.

What painkillers are you taking?

Kalypso · 05/01/2011 12:25

Thanks for posting :)
I've been taking lemsip (i.e. paracetamol) and nurofen. At one point, I had a Nurofen with Lysine but just the one dose.

My fever has come down a bit so I haven't taken any painkillers since yesterday afternoon. The swelling is still there but perhaps not quite as much as yesterday.

Blargh, now my chest is hurting when I cough or breathe in deeply. Rubbish old flu.

I would call and speak to gp. It's unusual with either paracetomol or ibuprofen (nurofen). However it could be a sign of a serious reaction and I would want to know that both your kidney and liver function are ok. (blood tests)
It could well be nothing but speak to your gp. They should be there until 6pm and will do telephone consults.

I second that, please call the GP.
