Help me stop panicking about this scan and the results

I've had upper right abdominal pain for the last two months - never really bad but it's there more and more frequently and it's stopping me sleeping at times. The sensations is like a large stone just below my ribs

I wasn't particularly worried until I saw the GP - I just assumed Gall stones, kidney stones or similar. She then asked me about weight loss, any history of cancer in the family etc and referred me for an ultrasound scan

The scan is next week and I get the results next Friday.

I have been trying very hard not to dwell on it but today I heard of my husband's friend who has liver cancer and it's terminal Sad Sad She's the same age as me

Please tell me how not to panic for the next week.....

try to keep calm it does sound like gall stones and after 2 months I think you would know if it was anything more serious.Good luck for next week

Easy to say 'don't worry' but you won't stop doing that until you've had the results through. All I can offer is that your symptoms sound just like mine and i've had 2 gallstones for around 10 years now. It's standard practice to do scans for gallstones so it doesn't mean anything sinister is on the cards.
hth, :)

Thanks - I will try and focus on gall stones then!

Kaytee - if you've had them for ten years why haven't they operated? I thought once you had gallstones they just removed the gall bladder? Have you had to be on a fat free diet for 10 years?? Shock

I have this too. I went to the GP two years ago and he wondered about gall stones as my mum had them, but the scan didn't show anything.

I still have it now and wonder if it's related to drinking? I probably drink too much wine (a couple of glasses several times a week) and think that makes it worse. I need to go back to the GP but am scared (like you) that it's liver cancer :(

I thought the symptom of gall stones was extreme pain-mine isn't like that bad though.

Gallstones can be left alone if they don't cause too much pain. It will be up to you to say if you want them taken out. it depends on how much they affect your life really. Mine only give me pain around once every 6 months, and that's only when i get very stressed. I've had a stroke too so I don't want surgery unless I absolutely have to. I do try to eat healthily too as well Wink

Had the scan this morning - the lovely Consultant who did the scan immediately told me that I do have lots of Gallstones - which is actually a huge relief!

Will be seeing my GP on Friday to discuss the next steps. I've had pain almost continually for over two months now (although often mild pain) - I am otherwise fit and well so I would be fairly keen on having the gallbladder removed now.

Am just trying to cope with the prospect of this low fat diet - eeek!

Teacher3 - I just found a reference on NHS information site that says a couple of units of alcohol can actually help gallstones Grin anyway please do go back to the GP - I am so happy that I now have a diagnosis as the worry of cancer was awful.

Thanks for posting back-you must be relieved! can youd describe the pain for me? I have a definite sensation that there's something under my right rib, but also have a discomfort in my right shoulderblade.

I'm worried because when they scanned me 2 years ago, there were no stones :(

I've just googles liver cancer (My husband calls this checking out www.imgoingtodie.com) and it mentions these things

Symptoms of liver cancer

The symptoms of primary liver cancer can include

* Significant loss of weight that cannot be explained
* Loss of appetite over a period of a few weeks
* Being sick
* Feeling full or bloated after eating, even after a small meal
* Pain or discomfort in the tummy (abdomen)
* A swollen tummy (abdomen)
* Yellowish skin, dark coloured urine and pale coloured faeces (jaundice)
* Itching
* A sudden worsening of health in somebody with known chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis
* A high temperature and sweating

None of which I have, but I still can't help thinking it's down to my drinking. I don't drink shed loads, just 2/3 glasses a few times a week but that's more than I should. I need to summon up some courage...

thelittlebluepills · 04/01/2011 15:35

the feeling of having something just under my right rib is exactly what I had. It didn't go up to my shoulder but if you look at the NHS information here it mentions the pain going to the shoulder
