ovarian cysts

I've just spoken to an out of hours GP on the phone, who says the burning and stabbing sensations in my ovaries may well be ovarian cysts. She said, 'Nothing serious will happen right now, just take some painkillers, but get in touch with you GP soon if you want to have more kids'

Well YES I do want more kids!!!! We're TTC now. But I just wondered - how urgent is this?! Should I arrange for a private gynaecological scan, or wait for an NHS appointment?

I probably won't be able to see a GP for a few days now anyway, the same day appointments are run by locums who honestly don't seem to give a shit. My GP is usually booked up for weeks.

I feel worried! I'm desperate for more kids!!!

It's all a bit speculative right now.

You feel the pain is in your ovaries and a GP on the phone (who has not seen or examined you) says it may well be cysts. There's nothing definite there.

Have you had these symptoms before or have been told before you may have cysts? Hard though it is, try no to worry too much until you're examined. Only you know how you feel phyiscally and how bad the pain is so only you can make the call about a private scan etc.

BTW, you're desperate for kids and I'm desperate for A kid. I have PCOS and a prolactinoma. Odds are pretty shit Sad

It also could be nothing to do with the ovaries if you haven't actually been examined.

You may feel the pain is in the ovaries but you don't know. There are other organs near there, it might be soemthing else.

Thanks for your replies. Pain got so bad during the night that when I got up to pee, I couldn't actually walk. Saw a doc this morning, but they said I have to go and see my own GP tomorrow, as no one is doing scanning at the hospital today as it's a bank holiday!!! I thought she was joking, but apparently not. Anyway, I have some hefty painkillers, which seem to be helping. Definitely not an ectopic pregnancy as -ve preg test, I'm guessing I'll just have to sit the pain out and hope for a quick referral for a scan.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. A1980 - I know I am incredibly fortunate to already have a child. I wish you all the luck in the world in TTC, I hope you have good medical support.

Oooh I had this - agonising pain in ovary area. Never really found out why it became acute like this but happened a couple of times. Turned out I had a dermoid cyst on my ovary and had laparoscopy to remove it. Went on to get my periods back to normal afterwards and then concieve children normally first try (despite being told it might be difficult).

I used to get this regularly every month for about 2 -3 days when I was ovulating. It was extrememly painful, it alternated sides each month. It was a good indicator of when to try to conceive.

ovumahead · 29/12/2010 11:35

Definitely not ovulation pain, since I've just had my period. GP has referred me for a scan, but it won't be for about 2 weeks as I'm not collapsing! May try to get a private scan if I can afford it. Definitely not kidneys either, since these are in your back, higher up. Hopefully will get some insight soon!

I had pain for a year before I saw a consultant who said I had a large cyst. I had it removed (along with half an ovary as the two were intwined). Operation resolved all the pain and I went on to conceive naturally. By the way, prior to op I was prescribed strong painkillers that are usually given to succeeded of arthritis - they really helped. Good luck.
