OOOH, THANKS, WILL WATCH THAT.

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 11:38

Sounds like a good watch.

No, I don't think a doctor should be struck off for helping a terminally ill person of sound mind end their life as they see fit.

RTKangaMummy · 30/09/2005 11:51

You're welcome

If this is the doctor who wrote himself a prescription but never actually gave the stuff to his friend then definitely not.

Generally I'd want to be pretty sure it was suicide and no pressure had been put on the patient but still no. If you saw how much some people suffer you'd want to stop it too.

My father did this to a patient at her request when he discovered that every other method of pain relief he could give her was actaully exacerabting her pain. It happened in hospital. She was aware, her family were aware, a priest present at the time was aware and he wrote what he had given her in the notes. When she died her family thanked him.

He was tried and convicted of attempted murder (CPS thought they wouldn't get a conviction if tried for murder), given a suspended sentence and allowed to continue practicing by the General Medical Council.

Do I agree? Yes, I think it should be legalised to avoid another Shipman sceanerio tho.

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 12:11

Exactly, Pennies! Working in a hospice gave me a whole new perspective about terminal illness.

Some people could get no relief at all despite the wonderful healthcare professionals' best efforts.

When this happened, and the person was of sound mind, even tho it was illegal, sometimes an arrangment could be made to help them.

no I dont think a doctor should be struck off
