1 year old with temp of over 100 for 5 days now...(off and on...)

DS2 (12 months) has had a really bad cold/ runny nose / temperature since last Sunday:

  • rivers of green snot
  • difficulty breathing
  • temperature ranging from 100 to 103, off and on
  • fitfulness with the high temperature - crying/moaning/ just wants to be cuddled
  • he's off his food, and (in my opinion) only just taking enough milk/water

we found a doctor on Bank Hol Monday who told it was just a viral infection i.e. couldn't give anything...
We've been alternating Calpol/ Calprofen, as often as we're able
Head of cot is propped up
Karvol on hankie above bed
Electric Menthol vapouriser is on
Stripped him down to nappy

Still no signs of any improvement, and tonight he seems worse again, rather than better, so anticipating the 5th night in a row of us being woken up every 2-3 hours..

I usually feel confident enough to assess whether either of my sons is just under the weather/ more seriously ill, but this one has me stumped - should I be more worried, or do we really just have to ride it out?

Went down to the Pharmacy tonight for more Calpol and some advice, and they suggested seeing the Dr again if the temperature persists overnight and "if I'm worried", but I'm just so sick of the GP just sending me away with one of those withering looks reserved for 'over worrying mothers' ....

Anyone going through something similar? any other ideas to help the poor little chap?
Should I be panicking and taking him to A&E?
(He's actually asleep at the moment, so probably not...)

Seems a long time to have a temperature to me (although ds2 had something similar a few months ago thinking about it- he even was fine for a day and then the temp came back).

If he's still like it tomorrow I'd go back and see dr again. Has anyone else had anything like it (ds1 was ill just before ds2 which was how I knew it wasn't serious- I was a bit stumped as well).

I would go to your GP tommorrow or go to A&E if you think its neccessary. At our A&E they send you to the paed assessment unit anyway. Better to safe.

and dont worry about pestering your GP thats what they are there for. The receptionist at ours always says 'hello fiona' when I start speaking

Mo2 · 28/08/2003 21:56

JimJams - yes- we also had the 'better for a day' thing - temperature came right down and he was laughing and playing with his cars, and now it's come back with a vengeance - very strange.

We went to the beach! I felt like a terrible mother when he woke up the next morning with a screaming high temperature again. I think it lasted about 5 days- and I remember feeling like you. I'd definitely take him back to the docs tomorrow if he's still bad- and if you get worried during the night to A and E of course. I've also found locally the out of hours dr service is very good (its right next to a and e but no queuing). I was about to go to the docs thinking he must have an infection, when he woke up and it had gone.

Mo2,

Poor little mite - it's horrible when they're so poorly.

No words of wisdom I'm afraid - other than to say don't let the perceived "withering looks" put you off going back to your GP. Five days is a long time for a 12 month old to be so poorly, and personally I would take him back tomorrow (unless he stages a miraculous overnight recovery - let's hope) just to check he is not dehydrated and his chest is clear. And if he seems to get worse in the night then just call your GP straightaway. Is the vapouriser one of those Vick's smelly plug in things, as opposed to a humidifier? If he is having trouble breathing then making steam will help - the bathroom is a good place (unless yours has an extractor fan like ours) or boil a kettle in the smallest room you've got.

Other than that you are doing all the right things. I really hope he's better tomorrow and you get a bit more sleep tonight..(((hugs)))

Mo2, lots of sympathy - over the last year, my ds (now 21 months) has had several bugs which sound similar - raging temp etc. Usually they last 3-5 days with ds. I agree with the others - if he's still bad tomorrow then contact the doctor again just in case he's developed a secondary infection. You are doing all the right things. Hope he gets better soon.

mears · 29/08/2003 00:29

Definately see GP tomorrow. Temperature should not last as long as this without further assessment by Dr.

Mo2 · 29/08/2003 09:56

Thanks everyone for advice & reassurance - as you could probably tell I was beginning to doubt whether we we doing the right things/ getting a bit desperate.

Quick update:
DS went on to sleep ALL NIGHT 7 pm - 7.30pm. we did check on him and his temperature had subsided a bit and he was breathing regularly, so we let him sleep on.

He woke up this this morning still crusty nosed, but temperature back to 98 - hurrah.
Had half his milk, and had a yoghurt, and has just gone back down for his morning nap.

So, I'm hopeful we may be through it (although as I said, we had a day of OK, then bad again before...)
Will wait til this afternoon to see how he is.
Thanks again folks.
