Am I a medical miracle? I can see (properly) again!

Went to have an eye test today. Been wearing glasses/contacts for more than 15 years. A few years ago my contacts started to make my vision worse, not better, and I could see the telly OK so I stopped wearing them. Never got round to having an eye test. Felt horribly guilty for driving without contacts or glasses yet felt I could see OK. Well, this morning I totally astonished the optician because my eyesight is, he says, perfect. 20-20 or better!
Has anyone else had this happen to them? Or will it deteriorate again?

Do you really want another baby, aloha? Best knit aloha a new brain first, Marina - her need is greater than mine

aloha · 30/09/2005 17:03

no, don't want to start rumours! no baby 3 for me! I'm 42 btw, but with the eyesight of a teenager!

Oooo there's hope for me yet! How short sighted were you before, aloha? Much hope for me? I'm -5.25 and -4.5

Oh goody, not long to wait then - I'm 36 on Sunday (I may have mentioned this once or twice already...)

marthamoo · 30/09/2005 17:08

Ooh, you're worse than me Georgina - I'm -3.5 and -3.75.

Actually, when I think of how little I can see without lenses in/glasses on - you must be really bad. What can you see?

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 17:15

Not very much - particularly in poor light. A big blur mostly.

Mind you, hubby is worse - he's -6 or thereabouts and can't read the two inch high numbers on his bedside clock without his glasses.

Half of my eyesight problems though isn't actually the distance, it's the skill/quality. I'm lousy at peripheral vision and at recognising faces - not because there's any damage to the eye itself, I just see lazily (as I don't rely on my sight quite as much as I ought). I'm also fairly accident prone which I'm fairly certain is linked to "laziness" seeing.

Just taken my glasses off, I need to be a handspan away from the computer screen before I can read the text.

Just tried the same without my specs and I need to be about a foot away to read it clearly, or 2 to be able to just make it out if I squint, and my vision isn't that bad.

flashingnose · 30/09/2005 22:03

Mine are -9.00 and -9.50

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 23:25

That's quite scary - if anything due to the weight your glasses must be! I know dh always pays extra to get the lighter lenses because it gives him headaches otherwise...

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 23:26

oops, was meant to be a

babaworshipper · 01/10/2005 00:37

snap flashing nose. Do you also get money off due to extreme vision? I was a little embaressed when the boots lady said loudly "And you get £25(ish) pounds off due to the strength of your prescription"

Get a black nose too if I try to read the Sunday Times with no glasses or lenses in....

Janh · 01/10/2005 00:54

But when you are v short-sighted you can pluck your eyebrows really easily and identify negatives, both essential skills for the modern woman I feel.

I used to be -10 in both eyes (free eye tests and specs that weighed several pounds), then developed major astigmatism in both eyes on top (combined prescription c -15). I could not recognise my own children from a distance of 2 or 3 yards, which was very depressing, and finally had to have lensectomy in both eyes - what cataract patients have (worn-out old lens removed & replaced with plastic one, under GA).

Immediately afterwards I was pretty much 20-20 - less good now though so my eyes are still mutating, plus i have shoals of floaters; but fixed-focus so without varifocals I can't read. But I can see every leaf on a tree from several hundred yards away and after 50 years of fog that's still wonderful

aloha, you are so lucky!

jabberwocky · 01/10/2005 01:14

Congrats, Aloha! I see this fairly often in my practice. Unfortunately, you start to lose the ability to see up close at about the same time.

Cam · 01/10/2005 13:09

See my thread yesterday on needing glasses for the first time!
Yes you do get more long sighted as you get older hence my need for reading glasses

Your Dad was right Marina

aloha · 01/10/2005 16:31

Well, I'm still going to enjoy this halcyon period of perfect eyesight...and worry about Miss Marple reading glasses later!

Blimey - wish that could happen to me! What's your prescription Aloha?

I only thought the other day that my 14 week old has actually got better eye sight than me! He can see me from his cot - i can't even see the cot!
