Breast lump(s) and pregnant- referral apt tomorrow

I've been referred to the Royal Berks Hospital breast clinic as I've found a lump (and doc felt two smaller ones on other side) in my breast.

does anyone know what happens- i.e. scans/mamogram/biopsy? and also how long till they can tell me if its benign or not? My mum had 2 lumps removed, both after having me and my brother and they were benign, no breast cancer in the family, but of course that doesn't stop me worring. I'm also 34wks pregnant.

I'm worried but trying not to jump to conclusions. I just don't know if they can find out at the appointment tomorrow or if I have weeks of agonising wait for results.

Hi. I had a lot of lumps over about 10 years, non when pregnant but I am pretty sure they were hormone related. All benign. They will examine you, probably ultra sound to look at the lumps. If they are cysts they may do nothing or even if they think they are fibroid adenoma (benign lumps of tissue) they may do an FNA -fine needle aspiration or core biopsy. Both are very quick and relatively painless. Histology is usually very quick and you know in a few days. There was also a history of benign lumps in other members of my family. The consultant could offer no reason as to why these occur but did say I was also no more likely to develop a cancerous lump than anyone else. Try to be positive and not worry too much, it is probably nothing at all.x

Hi Bluefootedpenguin,

thanks so much for replying- just having someone responding makes me feel better- I am trying not to worry, I guess the mind just wonders and then the anxiety creeps in. I've had a few lumps in the past but they've always gone away, though the doc said they tend to stay around during pregnancy as normally they'd usually disappear before the next period. (as you say, a hormonal thing)

thanks for the reassurance and info, it's just good to know what to expect and the letters they send are always so formal and a tad intimidating. I just want to get it over with.

best of luck for tomorrow. I had a pea-sized, really hard lump, and it was fine (touch wood); hope that you will be fine too
