Baby with perforated eardrum

My baby is ten months and has had a perforated eardrum several times. It usually heals and stops discharging within a day or two.

This time it has been nearly four weeks. It seems to improve for a day or two and is starts discharging pus again.

Since Wednesday it has been fine, but we had a bad night with him last night and this morning it is green and mucky again.

At what point do i go back to the doctor? He has been on antibiotics and ear drops, and it doesn't seem to be causing him any pain.

I would go back to the GP so they can check if he needs more/different antibiotics and also ask to be referred to a paediatric ear nose and throat consultant. TBH I am surprised GP hasn't already referred you given his young age and already having had this several times Shock

Agree with above, if still discharging go back to gp and ask for either: - gp to swab infection and test so get correct antibiotics to treat any bacterial infection and ask if can be referred for ENT ... drops tend to slide off, I have an ear infection and saw the nurse at ENT clinic who "squirted" in special antibiotic cream that STAYS on the infected site and it works so well!

Thanks.

I took him back and it turns out it is actually an infection in his ear canal, as opposed to a perforated eardrum which apparently is very unusual in babies. It's been caused by a bug called pseudonomas which is very resistant to antibiotics so he is on two different medications now and has to go back next week to see the ENT people to check it is better. If not, he will be looked at under anaesthetic.
