Is it usual to have pain two days after root canal treatment?

I had the first stage of root canal treatment yesterday morning after a night of excruciating toothache. The Xray showed that a deep filling in the tooth was pressing on the nerve, though there was no infection or 'significant inflammation'. The dentist advised me to go for the root canal option as the tooth isn't decayed and the root is apparently straight. The procedure itself was straightforward and painless - but the toothache returned as soon as the injection wore off and I'm still on regular painkillers. It's not as bad as it was on Wednesday night, but is still stopping me eating comfortably.

So - any dentists out there, or anyone who's had this treatment - is this normal or does it mean somethings gone wrong?

anyone? Woke up this morning with horrible pain along jaw line and into ear. can cope if it's normal but want to know if it's not! Mind you, dentists are closed and we're under six inches of snow, so will probably just have to put up with it anyway...sigh...

I've never had root canal but any time I've had work done near the root, my dentist has always told me to expect pain for a few days afterwards and to get back in touch if it doesn't settle down in a week or so.

You have my sympathies - nothing worse than dental pain :(

thanks Monkeynuts - the thing I hate more than anything is not being able to eat properly! the jaw/earache has gone, but I can't close my teeth together without pain -oddly not from the original tooth but from the very back molar on that side.
