Dead white finger tips when really cold?

This has happened a couple of times recently, not to all but to two or three fingers. It is also just at the ends, like the last joint to the finger tip.

I think its because they have just got very cold, and I have always had chilblains on a couple of toes since I was little. Maybe its a circulation thing?

I had it last night after DC school carols and as my fingers recovered you could see the blood flow restored so was so eeeuuuuwwwww it was fascinating! When they are like this, they feel like ice to me, but not if you touch them ( at least thats what DH said lats night)

I imagine prevention is the key here, I'm not sure what else could be done.

Does anyone else get this?!

I get it too - totally freaked me out the first time it happened. It tends to occur more often when its cold and damp- especially if I'm not moving round much. Anything to increase circulation helps (brisk walking, jogging). I find hand dryers or immersing hands in warm (but not hot) water help a lot.

Someone wrote into the health bit of the Guardian magazine today with exactly that problem and the GP said it was Reynauds.

Jellykat · 18/12/2010 18:01

I used to get chilblains in my toes too when younger. They've gone, but now have Raynauds in four fingers, i got it so badly last winter, that they swelled to the point i had to cut my rings off!Sad

Avoid sudden extremes of temperature, and of course cold.. Yes ginger is good, so is Black pepper in an oil form, from health food shops. Dilute with Almond oil.Rub onto your afflicted fingers, it really warms and helps the circulation, good to do last thing at night!

My fingers go blue, they look like zombie hands.. yikes!

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 19/12/2010 20:43

It doesn't seem to be uncommon, or anything to be overly concerned about then?

Although it going blue would be a bit more scary looking.

It hurts a lot though. In my case anyway.

Does anyone else also find they get pins and needles in their hands if they have been lying on their hands/arms when asleep at night? I often find I wake up with pins and needles, which sort itself out when I have managed to extricate my hands.... One time I woke to find a very strange stray hand on my pillow - until I realised it was mine, and had gone numb as I was lying on my arm Xmas Blush

Yes I get the pins and needles/dead hands things too!

Makes turning off the alarm blinking tricky!

SnowMuchToBits · 20/12/2010 21:31

Lol, yes I quite often drop the alarm clock! Xmas Shock

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 20/12/2010 23:16

Well I have taken to putting my gloves on the radiator so they are warm before I set off. This I hope gives me a head start to avoid white fingers!

Have had this for years but it's got worse over past few years. Was recommended to keep my 'core' warm so have resorted to vests, body-warmers, etc. I try to fit as many layers on as I can (think Michelin Man Xmas Shock) and have found DH's sheepskin gloves are great. Best place to warm up white fingers is your armpit, makes it hard to push trolley round supermarket though Xmas Hmm

I have this and something that has helped this year is wearing wool wrist warmers (as well as mittens). This helps them from becoming cold in the first place.
