DS (22mos) has generally had fairly runny poo. I just put it down to him eating loads of fruit and veg and not being too great on the carbs.

I beginning to think (and feel bad for only just doing so) that he may have some sort of food intolerance.

He does eat a lot of cheese, yoghurt and is quite good with his milk (cows). Can you see where this is going?

What do you think?

Does he get any skin rashes? my ds2 was lactose intolerant (horrible poos) but grew out of it. still gets bad poos sometimes if he eats a lot of dairy.

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 10:13

FWIW, my 3 year old DD has always has soft poo. She displays no signs of an intolerance, no tummy cramps, rashes, vomiting or anything so I've never been worried about it.

madmarchhare · 28/09/2005 10:20

No rashes and doesnt seem to have any tummy aches. Its just that Ive suddenly thought of it and you know what it like..

Interested to read your post MMH as my DS (15ms) also has soft poo (and vv smelly ) most of the time and is a fan of soft fruit which is what I put it down to, too, but he also eats a lot of cheese, milk etc as hes currently vegi ( as am I).

BS1-you asked about skin rashes -my DS has a pimply rash (looks and feels like goose bumps) on his legs, arms and cheeks. I mentioned it to the GP who said prob a mild eczema-type rash. What sort of rash did your DS2 have?

Sorry to have hi-jacked the thread MMH -it just sounded very familiar and is something thats been on the back of my mind for a while. Trouble is I think a lot of HVs and GPs think that food allergies/intolerances are the "latest thing" that parents think their child has at every instance in that self-diagnosis way (NOT saying that thats what anyone is doing here, don't get me wrong -I just felt I was getting a "don't go down that route" type of response when I asked GP if it was a possibility)

all this talking about poo made me think of that Gillian McKeith woman off TV -wonder what she'd make of the wide variety of baby/toddler poo we get faced with every day

Marina · 28/09/2005 11:03

MMH, there is a condition called toddler diarrhoea which sounds quite like what your ds has. Can I ask what he drinks apart from milk, because this is sometimes linked to a higher than average consumption of fruit juices and squash.
From what you say about his overall health I'd be astonished if he was lactose intolerant.
Children do grow out of toddler diarrhoea - my ds thoughtfully graduated from it to chronic constipation almost overnight...with no change whatsoever in his diet

Marina · 28/09/2005 11:06

For example
It is a medically recognised condition but absolutely no cause for concern if the child is otherwise well.
Just yucky...and stinky IME

madmarchhare · 28/09/2005 11:26

No worries, hijak away hornbag - I know what you mean about being the latest thing to dream up, which is why I was testing on here before I mention to HV at 2yr check .

Marina, he just has water really, occasionally he has watered down fruit juice, but only once a week or so.

Ds mainly drank water too, so does dd, who also has it slightly...mention it to your HV.

madmarchhare · 28/09/2005 14:52

I think I will, do you think Id be OK to wait until 2yr check?

My ds is the same, always does runny poos but also eats loads of fruit and veg (have trouble getting him to eat much of anything else) and dairy. He doesn't ever frink fruit juice though. He also has the pimple rash that hornbag mentioned that definitely gets worse if he eats bananas. I too have wondered whether he has a food intolerance/allergy other than the banana one. Am currently wondering about citrus fruits?

I think I'll wait then seen as he doesnt seem to have any other symptoms and is happy enough.

Ah, you see, I feel better all because of MN .
