Sore throat...

How long is it normal to have a sore throat for?

I usually have it for a day or two at the start of a cold and then it goes.

I have had this one for 4 days now and it is still the sort that you have to brace yourself before you swallow.
Should I be concerned or does this happen?
I have had a look and can't see any white, tonsilitus style, blobs so I don't think I have tonsilitus. Sad

There seem to be some really nasty throat infections going around at the mo, 2 of my rellies have had to go to GP and get some antibiotics and still it has lingered for a couple of weeks.

Are you on the strongest lozenges that you can buy over the counter? i.e something like dequacaine that will kill a mild infection aswell as numb the area making it easier/less painful to swallow.

Hope you feel better soon.

tonsillitis will show as very red tonsils right in the back of your throat and if you try to touch them they really hurt. I find that it helps to gargle with Molkosan (kind of horrible but apparently very healthy vinegar from Dr Vogel, many health food stores sell it) and then gargle with Echinecea (probably because it is high in alcohol), horrible whilst you are doing it but very soothing afterwards, alternatively, gargle with TCP
If you are worried I would see GP.

There are some hellish sore throats going around.

I feel as if I've had a sore throat for the best part of a month. In fact, I have.

Could be viral tonsilitis - you don't get the blotches then apparently. However, it also means there is no point having antibiotics and you just have to sit it out.

Gargling with asprin is supposed to help kill the pain too.

Hope you feel better soon.
