I have been recently been diagnosed with an extreme Underactive thyroid. To those who don't know, this is when your thyroid gland does no produce enough hormone and one of the affects is a tendency to gain weight.

Can anyone suggest a diet/eating plan which may help?

TheHolly - that is very encouraging - well done you Smile, I had rather despaired of ever losing my thyroid weight, but it's nice to hear that it's possible albeit with hard work.

Interesting (and slightly depressing)to see that a lot of people have received very little information from health care professionals. Anything I know has come about from reading and asking questions on this forum.

It is possible to lose weight with an underactive thyroid. I dropped a stone earlier this year, before getting PG, but I had to be very strict with my calories and portion sizes. I found an app for my phone to work out my daily calorie intake, which really helped. I also made sure I exercised for at least 30 mins everyday. Be it on the wii fit, walking somewhere instead of driving, swimming with my son. You CAN do it but you do need to be strict with yourself. Good luck.

I was diagnosed with Graves in 1992, had a subtotal thyroidectomy later that year and naturally am hypothyroid. Have taken 100mcg of thyroxine since 1992. Have had no problems at all relating to hypothyroidism since. Have annual blood tests to check dose. At the beginning I was very distressed, however, but my consultant recommended I contact the British Thyroid Foundation for advice and support. If you have concerns about this condition please google them, they are very very helpful and have lots of information.

I also was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was pregnant with DS1 who is now three. Was started on 50mg of thyroxine, but again tested when pregnant with DD and am now on 150mg.

I know nothing about my situation really. Was seen by an obstetrician who specialises in thyroid probs and an endrocrinologist happened to be there at the time.

I haven't been tested for a while as I keep forgetting to take the tabs. I am tired a lot and am also overweight.

But, before I was diagnosed, did lose two and a half stone on slimming world.

I am also interested in what you should be asking doctors etc.

TheHolly, I have also seen wheat/thyroid connection mentioned on celiac forum with amazing results on going wheat/gluten free, well done you! (We are gf for a different reason)

My older sister has under active thyroid (hypothyroidism) too. She is taking bovine thyroid supplements for a year and a half. Now she is okay.

Try these exercises. They stimulate all the body's glands. I feel better as a result.

Scroll down to the little video. Don't be put off by the ancient teachings bit.

Just found this thread and have a few questions.

I have an underactive tyriod and take 150mg a day .

I have done for about 3 years.

I started taking it in the morning and after a year or so read on the internet that it is better to take before you go bed.

So I did and felt a lot better. But things have gone downhill.

This week after a mix up at the , chemist I was without pills for one day, usually taking it in the evening I could'nt.

When I awoke the next morning I felt great usually I feel tired and sluggish.

So when do you take your tabs, and what have you been advised and I felt so good yesterday morning I was thinking of going to the docs and asking if I could stop taking them.

My bloods were checked in jan and doc happy with dose I am taking.
