went to dentist and he said my tooth was badly decayed and would need a root canal treatment

£550

my dentist is a private one tho trying to find a nhs pratice

im dithering whether to go for it or to have tooth out and be a gappy old young woman

some friends have had a root canal (at less cost i may add) and most said it didnt work and had to have the tooth out eventually

I paid £450 I think privately for mine about 13 years ago and it's still going strong if that helps?

LIZS · 09/12/2010 16:27

Depends which tooth really. I've got a root filled molar and although unsightly it has lasted 25 years ! (touch wood). My front tooth also needed a root filling a few years ago (nerve had died) which initially didn't work and had to be done surgically.

Poledra · 09/12/2010 16:27

Have had 3 root canals (said casually, like it's no big deal Grin).

One was nearly 11 years ago, badly done and needed redoing this year - it was blindingly expensive, which means about the same as you have been quoted for a regular root canal (it's a lot more complicated to remove and redo a RC treatment). I had to have a second one done next to the dodgy one, as an infection in the dodgy one had knackered the tooth next to it. Also done privately, £350.

I would have it done if i were you (though would shop around!) but I cannot bear the thought of having a gappy mouth (yes, even at the back - I'm not old enough for that!).

I've had two, both NHS, nothing like that cost, though I can't remember the details exactly. One at the front, and one molar - I reckon better to hang onto the tooth as long as you can, even if it won't last for ever. The front one lasted about 20 years (though by the end of that it had gone a bit darker clour) then broke off and I had to get a crown.

I have a couple and would definitely choose it over losing a tooth, if you can afford it.
I recently had to have one replaced as apparantly the tooth had a 4th nerve that wasn't detected when it was originally filled and became infected 6 years down the line. It cost me just under £800 for the endodontist treatment and a further £100 ish for the lab fees for the crown I then needed. (I have Denplan but it doesn't cover what was classed as cosmetic work). I think I made the right decision to save my tooth, even though it is a back tooth and not really visible.

I have a small one on a front tooth and then one on a large molar which had cracked.

No problems with them at all.

My view when looking at the price of maintaining/fixing teeth is that they're more important to me than a car, and I pay for that to be serviced and fixed.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2010 17:09

its the very back molar so no one can see a hole if i smile

its a huge amount of money to spend and i really dont know what to do - esp if it fails as tooth is half rotten (hence the filling) and what happens if it still hurts/gives me grief after spending that amount

i can go on holiday for that

'sighs'

maybe santa will bring me a new tooth/lots of money for xmas?

I had one in the US several years ago due to extensive damage, cracking and bits missing from my molar, and had a crown and post put in -- it came to $1500. The replacement is still there and I've never had the slightest problem. I feel it was well worth it.

I have several but I wouldn't bother if a back molar had to have a root canal filling.

No one can see back there.

All mine are where you can see them and I've even had a repair, at an eye watering cost. Took two sittings a screen and a microscope to complete.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/12/2010 15:18

thanks ladies

ive got an appointment at a nhs surgery, tho not sure if they will take me on or do the work but will try

i just balk at the cost, esp as may not last/work
