How long until impetigo isn't infectious anymore?

To cut a long story short, DS1 has had impetigo for almost 2 weeks, but it was only diagnosed last Thursday. We have had to stop giving him antibiotics (on doctors advice) as they were making him hyper. It is now clearing up and the 'new skin' is red with a few flaky areas.

My main problem is that school have said he can go back when it's not infectious anymore. He only started school 3 weeks ago, the first 2 weeks were baseline tests, so he has only had 3 days of being 'properly' taught. We have to go and see the nurse this afternoon but I'd really appreciate any advice from you lovely people!

I thought it was like chicken pox - once scabbed over not infectious

Definately not contagious if new skin is there. It is supposedly non contagious after either 2 days on antibiotics or when the sores are scabbed over.
