Hi, this is the most embarassing thing ever,i have a couple of sore itchy patches, very small, on vulva, red and really itchy. i had to go to my gp luckily she was really nice but she said im not going to give you anything, im going to refer you to gynae at the hosp straightaway. she said it looks like an ulcer. im really panicking as i stupidly googled the symptoms and im thinking cancer.

sorry, forgot to say this has bothered me slightly for about ten or so years, the reason i didnt go to gp til now was because i thought it was related to childbirth 'tear' from years ago. also it is def not std related. anyone had any experience re what will the gynae do, what it could be etc?? im now itchy most of the time but more of an ''ants in pants'' way rather than thrush ifyswim!

It might be lichen planus (not sure of spelling). I recently had a gynae consult for possible prolapse and while being examined he asked me if I had any external discomfort (which I do on and off). Apparently it is very common (they have whole gynae/dermatology clinics) but more so in older women. Can be lniked to previous skin trauma eg stitches. A 2 week dose of dermovate seems to have helped enormously. Anyway, just a possibility.

Didn't want your post to go unanswered. AM not a medic, but please try not to worry... Good luck and for heaven's sake stop googling!

thank you both, i have heard of lichen planus (thanks to my googling frenzy) im not sure if i count as older as im 40 ha ha but i think any age can get it?? maybe it is that, and yes i must stop googling but i cant help myself! the gp said not to put anything on it but the itching is driving me to distraction. i just hope the appointment hurries up then i can get an answer (hopefully) i have had abnormal smears many years ago so i suppose im just being paranoid! thanks x

try putting sudocream on? i know she said not to but it might soothe it at least and shouldnt irritate like vagicil etc might?

im awful for googling! you look up some things and convince yourself youve got mere hours to live!!

napoleona · 06/12/2010 15:09

believe me i have convinced myself it could be the worst! i should not be allowed to google.its all i can think about! think i might try some calomine cream as its soo itchy.

just in case anyone else has something similar, an update: i went to gynae clinic and they have done a colcoscopy and biopsy of my vulva, apparently cancer is possible but unlikely, whoever knew you could even get cancer there??! 4 weeks for results so keep fingers crossed cheers x
