ibs while pregnant

I have been recently diagnosed with ibs. My husband and I are wanting to start trying to have a second child. My GI doctor has said that he does not recommend women with ibs to become pregnant due to the risks. I was wondering if anyone that has irritable bowel syndrome (ibs)has either gone through a pregnancy or is currently pregnant and if so, what was your experience. I appreciate anyone taking to time to respond as this is something that has been weighing heavy on my mind. Thank you.

I had IBS quite badly througout my 20's. I was never told it should stop me becoming pregnant, or that it was even something to consider. In fact, I found that as soon as I got pregnant, my IBS symptoms disappeared. (Of course they were replaced by lots of different and worse pregnancy symtoms )
As you know though. a diagnosis of IBS covers many many different things, and mine was never that bad - but I think it is definately worth consulting another doctor.
Good luck

Like prufrock, I also have/had IBS, mine is the opposite to yours though, I have the trots!!Again like Prufrock, I was never told it should stop me becoming pregnant and I also found that as soon as I got pregnant, my IBS symptoms disappeared. Has Your doctor explained the risks to you? Is it is due to constipation worsening or the bowel spasms bringing on early labour? Here is some advice
on Babycentre about IBS and pregnancy- try an internet search on Google.

What a strange thing for your dr to say! What risks?

I'm another IBS sufferer and it was only properly diagnosed (although I suspected it for a few years as my Mum suffers also) when was were trying for DS2, all my Dr said was that if I was trying for a baby she wouldn't recommend taking any medication. I do however take Acidophilous (sp?) good bacteria tablets and bio yoghurt which hel.

yeah my dr said that if i become pregnant his hands would be tied with being able to help me with the pain or any flare ups because there arent many meds safe for pregnancy. he stated that one of the big risks is that i might be in so much pain that i may have to terminate the pregnancy or even risk having a miscarriage. he said that he has had patients that have actually terminated the pregnancy rather than deal with the pain.and of course that really concerns me and my husband. also did u notice that most of your ibs related pain was over after first trimester? i have noticed that that is the case with some people. i am also considering treating my ibs on my own with breathing techniques and eating right. any suggestions of things that work for you other than medication?
