Shooting pain in right hip...

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/12/2010 02:09

Had a really niggling pain in my right hip ever since giving birth (4.5 months ago). Today it is absolutely a shooting pain, I struggle to put any weight on it. If someone said that my pelvis stretched during childbirth and trapped a nerve or something when it went back to normal I would believe them.

Hoping it would go away by itself but it's not, should I go and see a GP or a chiropractor?

Chiropracter first. I have this, worse round my period and made worse by a fall I had when my legs when from under me and I landed on my hip. I also had quite bad sps with DS2. He's 3 now and the sps is resolved and the hip is much better.

I would say gp first, you could need an xray to look at the hip joint.

Chiropracters can refer for Xrays as well Smile and are far more knowledgeable regarding joints and muscles than your average GP. Go to the specialist I say.

contact the pelvic partnership and they will give you names of reputable physios/osteopaths/chiropractors in your area who are experienced and competent in dealing with spd (your symptoms do sound like spd). Most women who are treated successfully for spd go private, physiotherapy on the nhs for this problem is rarely of good quality. Also have a look at pins network Scotland, another charity which provides information and support for women with spd.

I had this after having DD2, I had bad SPD during the pg and my hips have been bad since. When I went to the GP, it turned out to be 'Bursitis' which is an infection of the hip joint. They gave me antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and it soon cleared up. I still get niggles now but just take some ibuprofen and it eases off. Hope you get better soon.

I would really recommend you go to your gp first. If you are suffering with bursitis, capsulitis or any other infective or inflammatory condition, going to a chiro will not help, they cannot prescribe meds and you will be charged for it.

Go to the gp first, get it screened for above conditions, and then, if it is a muscular / skeletal condition get to the chiro, physio or osteopath.

Jeez getting a GP appt is like getting blood out of a stone. Receptionists clearly don't like taking 'live' calls and it permanently goes through to voicemail with a veiled promise of 'trying' to get back to me by the end of the business day...still waiting!

Just for info...saw chiropractor yesterday, have tendonitis in my hip flexor muscle and the shooting pain was the muscle getting trapped in hip socket. Apparently quite common during and post pregnancy due to softening muscles, change to centre of gravity and the fact that new Mums sit down more than normal (to feed their DC/out of sheer exhaustion!).

He did lots of manipulation to try and stretch the muscle out, really quite painful and I'm aching a lot today although he said I would. Back tomorrow for more treatment. Might mention it to my GP on Friday also but guessing they'll just give ibuprofen.
