Genital Warts!!

I have them,

Noticed first one little while ago, have had 2 frozen off. Been clear now for a little while.

How long have you been clear??

Feel sick.

They are caused by the herpes virus, similar to the one that causes chicken pox and cold sores, meaning that they are always in your system and re-appear when you are unwell or stressed. Have you been back to your GP?

genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus HPV and herpes is caused by herpes simlex virus HSV

Only just seen this.

Had them many years ago.

About 10yrs later had an abnormal smear-
CINII for which I had laser treatment.

So keep up with the smears, or if you have any pain/bleeding after sex, get checked.

A190 - Can I ask why you think that not many people on here would have GW? Are mumsnetters immune? Do you think only a certain type of person gets them?

  1. Most people infected with the hpv strain that causes warts will not actually get warts. They still have the virus. See link www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/sexual_health/stis_warts.shtml
  1. Hpv is a consequence of having sex really. You can get it even if you use a condom and have never slept with anyone else.
  1. You are not "most likely" to also have them in your vagina. Though you should be examined and treated obviously.
  1. Some wart types are linked to an increase in risk for cervical cancer. Not all. There are over 100 strains of hpv. It is important that we all have regular smear tests. Whether we have exhibited symptoms of hpv infection or not.
  1. There is no reason why you could not have a vaginal birth unless the warts were so severe as to obstruct the birth canal.
  1. It is completely different to herpes.
  1. You do not need regular check ups. If they come back, deal with them again. You do not need to think about it when they are not there.

I hope this helps boohoo. Please don't worry and don't beat yourself up about it. Get to your gp or gum clinic and get it sorted.

Hi boohoo. Please don't think that you are alone. As Vbnm said lots of people have the hpv virus and are unaware, hence the need for a hpv vaccine. My DP had warts soon after we met, they were treated then (8yrs ago) and have not returned. Shortly after that I had a smear and then a biopsy which showed moderate changes caused by the hpv strain which causes genital warts. I had large loop excision of the area of change and have had no problems since (I have regular smears). I genuinely don't worry about it and count myself lucky that at least I know the risks so can be vigilant. Please try not to let it worry you.

a1980-that was inaccurate and insensitive. Loads of mumsnetters will have had genital warts or will have hpv, but people keep quiet about it. This just encourages the ignorant attitude that only certain sectors of society are prey to STIs.

Vbnm rocks! Listen to the advice from her (?) and please don't worry. Treat them and they will go away, they may come back so you treat them again.

And they do not cause cervical cancer, or CIN.

The virus that causes them definitely causes types of cancer.I have just had a leaflet on this as I am in a high risk group due to medication I am on.Get then
m treated and no sex!

The NHS clearly states that the type of HPV that causes warts is different to that which causes cervical cancer.

Isn´t it that if you have had warts you are prone to HPV & therefore more likely to have CIN that someone who has never had warts?

That could be right diddl. There is contradictory information on this. See cancer research website which agrees with nhs guidance posted by bertiebassett that it is not the same virus.

No, but it´s a different strain of the same one?

So if you´ve had one, it would make sense that you might get another?

Bit like having had chiken pox & then getting shingles?

Afaik there are over 100 strains of hpv. You dont get strains with strains iykwim. It makes sense that if you have one strain you are more likely to have been exposed to another and have it too.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I didn't think there would be any to be honest as I didn't think many would bother to name change, as I'm sure they would have especially if they are a regular on here. I have namechanged also.

To those of you who have had them been treated and had no episodes since I am hopeful that they will not return.

I have been to my local GUM clinic on several occasions and have been given the all clear, for time being anyway.

I'm well aware that they are contagious and I should not be having sex while they are visible and that the virus will be in my system forever.

When the first one appeared I was given Warticon and used a six week treatment course in four days and burnt my vagina, bottom and legs beyond belief. I was desperate to get rid of it and lashed the cream on. Took a while to heal and 2 more appeared and I had them frozen off.

Again thank you for your replies and I'm crossing everything they don't appear again, especially my legs ha ha
