Oh dear, sounds awful. Maybe cutting out sugar and yeast will help as that may be feeding the infection.
So no choc, mushrooms, bread etc

You've mentioned natural yoghurt, that does work well

tinylou · 29/11/2010 22:48

Oh blimey.. i work in a chocolate factory too....
thats gonna be an easy one then!!!!
but ill do anything to get id of this :(

A chocolate factory? Wow. I bet the perks are great.
It's worth trying to give it up even temporarily.

witchinthewindows · 29/11/2010 22:55

avoid strong shower gels and ensure that your partner has been treated, I had it for years and it is grim as you pass it back and forwards

babybear5 · 29/11/2010 23:07

i had continual thrush both vaginally and orally when i was pregnant. I was given nystatin which worked really well in the stronger dose after baby born.
its horrible..hope you sorted soon Smile

tinylou · 30/11/2010 07:27

ahh thanks lovelies.. ill try anything.. just to rid that itch!

ps..had anyone tried the yoghurt on the tampon thing?? Confused

Another tip is to wear cotton undies / no undies at night. And generally keep things as cool as possible as bacteria like it warm. My sister used to swear by microwaving her kinckers too. Said it killed off any nasties and stopped re-infection.

marriednotdead · 30/11/2010 07:44

Hi.

I did- once. Not that successful but very messy.

YY to cutting sugar and yeast, it will make a huge difference. Once you've got a candida overload it seems to be the only way to get it under control.

DD had to do this earlier this year after similar problems. Total sugar/yeast elimination for 8 weeks but no thrush since Smile

tb · 10/12/2010 16:48

Repeated thrush, can be a sign of auto-immume disease like hypothyroidism etc.

cece · 10/12/2010 16:50

My recurrant thrush stopped when I stopped using tampons. I now ue a mooncup or sometimes a pad. Much better.

GregoryPeck · 10/12/2010 17:17

I had this, for nearly TWO YEARS! a two week course of flucanazole and boil washing all my underwear sorted it. AMy more excitIng knickers didn't survive it but I now wear only cotton pants. I try not to wear tights unless necessary ( hold ups and tights only if wearing a short dress) and I try and keep my yeast intake down ( not too difficult as DP wheat intolerant so don't have that much bread). If I have a bath I have it with a tiny bit of tea tree oil and no bath products.
I also switched to latex free cond

GregoryPeck · 10/12/2010 17:18

condoms as the GP said that might be an issue.

GregoryPeck · 10/12/2010 17:19

( have not had a recurrence since the flucanazole by the way)

AliBellandthe40jingles · 10/12/2010 17:27

Has your GP run any blood tests? Recurrent thrush can indicate low iron levels. Might be worth taking a supplement to see if things improve.

SantaClausImWorthIt · 10/12/2010 17:37

Right.

Go and get yourself another Diflucan tablet (get Boots/Tesco's own brand as it's much cheaper). And buy some Canestan cream and the Canestan pessary. (I think they come in a multi pack together.

Take the tablet straight away, apply the cream straight away and insert the pessary tonight when you go to bed.

You should also get your DP to use the Canestan cream on himself, as it's really easy to keep passing it back and forwards to each other.

Don't have sex unless you're using a condom (although I guess you probably don't feel like it right now!)

You also need to go and get yourself some acidophilus - this is a probiotic. Go to a good healthfood store. It should be stored in the fridge, as it contains live bacteria. The antiobiotics have wiped out the good bacteria in your gut along with the ones that were causing your initial infection.

If you're constantly scratching (and it's likely that you're doing this at night/in your sleep) it's worth considering taking an antihistamine to dampen down the itching.

Don't take Yakult/Actimel instead - they are full of sugar.

Now you have to look at your diet. It's hard, but you need to avoid:

  • anything fermented - alcohol, vinegar, soy sauce
  • anything with sugar in it, which includes all fruit
  • anything with yeast in it - bread, marmite, alcohol
  • anything that's a fungus - mushrooms, Quorn, blue cheese
  • white pasta/rice

You need to keep your diet simple - meat/fish/poultry with vegetables.

Don't eat leftovers - they can easily harbour mould spores.

Wear only cotton underwear. If you can afford to, replace your current underwear. If you can't, then boil wash everything.

Don't wear anything tight. If you can, go commando - let the air get at your bits!

A warm (not hot) bath is very soothing, and add some tea tree oil. No bath oils, soap or bubble bath.

You can try applying yoghurt, but if you do, make sure it's a live yoghurt.

When mine was at its worst, I used to wrap some ice cubes in a flannel and apply it - just to numb/cool everything down! (Not a great look if you have company, mind you!)

Good luck - it's a horrible condition. I suffered from it every month (it's related to your menstrual cycle) for several years.

MiasMARY · 10/12/2010 17:48

I had it for ages after I had my ds, caused I think by masses of antibiotics when I was pg.

I tried all the otc medication and it'd shift it but it just came back with every period.

In the end I had a massive tube of some gyno daktarin prescribed by my gp with applicators which I had to use to kind of squirt it in once a day for either one week or two. It worked brilliantly and I've not had it since.

Have you spoken to your dr ?

PlentyOfParsnips · 10/12/2010 17:57

Aw, sympathy! I'm suffering at the moment too. It's the first time I've had it for four years but I used to get it most months. I'm blaming this outbreak on changing my laundry liquid. Santa's list is excellent and I have nothing to add really, except that if you want to try the yoghurt thing, spreading it on a pad seems to work better than on a tampon.

ps I've got no knickers on Xmas Wink

SantaClausImWorthIt · 10/12/2010 18:38

Xmas Grin at PlentyOfParsnips - bit TMI!

orangeflutie · 10/12/2010 19:48

OMG I get thrush a lot too. I'm currently treating my latest outbreak.

Have taken note of the tips above. It's definitely all worth trying.

Thanks x

4nomore · 10/12/2010 20:09

Just a thought (sorry, a further complication really) - I can't use Canestan anymore, I've become allergic to it or something and it makes me worse than the thrush! I have to use Daktarin instead. I used Canestan for quite a while without problems but then one time after using the "brick" pessary I became super sore and I've never been able to tolerate it since

hermioneweasley · 10/12/2010 20:19

see your GP and ask for a prescription of fluconazole tablets for a week.

Have you been tested for thrush? I say that because i have had recurrent thrush for years and years and i was SURE i had a case that wouldnt go away. when i was tested it wasn't thrush and the GP suggested something called balance activ to rebalance the vaginal PH which has improved it no end. It was incredibly sore and itchy - couldnt believe it was just a PH issue.

good luck - its miserable.
