Constant heartburn getting me down

SpareRoomSleeper · 25/11/2010 16:58

Im not pregnant.

I have heartburn all of the time - I get it with toast, tea, jacket potatoe, foods as bland as they come make me suffer afterwards.

Has anyone had this problem? My doctor has given me colofac but its not helped.

Does anyone know how I can deal with this?

Its really getting me down now. I feel sick and off all day long. Sad

I didnt mean i get it with only them foods - I meant I get it with anything and everything, and those were some of the blandest foods I could think of to use as example.

I get it quite a bit myself. Always after I have lemon curd on toast, and I love lemon curd on toast! I use Rennies. Not sure if they make much difference, but my husband says they really do for him when he gets it. We use the fruit ones that are a bit like refreshers. My dad used to drink milk when he had heartburn.

Try taking a teaspoon of apple cider in hot water with honey after each meal to help the digestive process.

atswimtwolengths · 25/11/2010 21:31

Do you take anti-inflammatories?

Are you overweight?

Both can cause this. Try Omaprazole - you can buy it over the counter or your doctor can prescribe it. It's fantastic.

SpareRoomSleeper · 26/11/2010 14:52

Thanks guys. Im not overweight, as in BMI is fine, (although I am trying to lose some weight). Docs prescribed me gaviscon now alongside colofac and said some stuff about having a regular diet. Dont know how effective that will be.

Truly ,Omaprazole is fantastic.
It will get rid of your heartburn .

lostinwales · 26/11/2010 17:19

Have you tried eating pineapple, I know it sounds bizarre but I had hideous heart burn in my last pregnancy and this was the only thing that helped. There's an enzyme in it or something.

Yes super is right about carbs. Also try quarter tsp bicarb of soda in 1 tablsp lemon juice on an empty stomach. Let it bubble up before you drink it.

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2010 10:49

Take care with antacids ,they can make yr stomach worse; try alkilising yr body with squeezed lemon juice in warm water first thing. Also eat fruit on it's own never after a meal.

BecauseImWorthIt · 27/11/2010 10:50

Eat little and often
Avoid: chocolate, cheese, coffee/caffeine (which is also in Coke, don't forget), wine, especially red and too much fat

Zantac (or Boots/supermarket equivalent) in conjunction with Gaviscon can help.

I get it when I'm especially stressed, so I sympathise.

If stress is a trigger for you, then look into ways you can alleviate that.

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2010 10:53

Sorry to go on I just remembered something else ; try resting after eating (not bending down or rushing about! difficult with L.O's I know Grin

SpareRoomSleeper · 27/11/2010 11:51

Ive been told by friend to push to have an ultra sound done, because its not normal and thats how her problem started - she is now going through all the ultra sound etc 12 years later, after having tablets/gaviscon given to her for years and doctors not really caring about treating the problem, only the symptom. Now they think its gall stones or something.

Is it likely that I have an ulcer or something?

IMo it's normal when you follow a "normal" western diet (hamburgers. pies etc) are not good for the digestion some people suffer more than others of course. Don't worry.

ppeatfruit · 28/11/2010 08:20

Just try eating fruit on an empty stomach; DH immediately cured his heartburn when he did this.

EggFriedRice · 28/11/2010 22:50

Can be a sign of Pancreatic Cancer, make sure your GP rules this out.

bubblerock · 28/11/2010 22:55

I get it frequently too - If I don't have gaviscon or rennies fishermans friends help a lot Confused

jalopy · 29/11/2010 07:13

That's reassuring EggFriedRice. I'm sure she feels a lot better now.

SpareRoomSleeper · 30/11/2010 17:30

Yes it is jalopy. Very.
