Fallen off my bike

I fell off my bicycle last night on the way home from work and hit my head on the road. A lump came up over my eye straight away and I was a bit dazed but managed to cycle home. Today my eye is half closed and there is lovely dark bruising all around the eye. I ache a bit all over (especially my neck and ribs, and my knee which is swollen as well) and I'm very tired with a bit of a headache. No dilated pupils or dizziness though.

I went to the Urgent Care unit today and they said to take tomorrow off too.

Would you though?

Have you had an x-ray of your facial bones to see if there's any fracture there?

cyclist · 25/11/2010 16:17

No but the doc checked and there isn't any pain on the other side of my eye socket so there isn't a fracture there.

Ouch.

I fell off my bike this summer and the pain from the bruised ribs was incredible. Worse than childbirth.

Take tomorrow off.

I still have twinges when I turn over in bed sometimes.

MmeLindt · 25/11/2010 16:19

Did you have a helmet on?

Cyclebump · 25/11/2010 16:20

I would. I had a minor accident on mine winter before last and though I was fine, just bumps and bruises. The adrenaline wear off made me really shaky the next day though and I spent the whole day at my desk feeling distinctly weird.

cyclist · 25/11/2010 16:22

Yes thankfully I was wearing a helmet! I hit the road on my eyebrow and also my chin which is numb and bruised. I just feel a bit guilty about taking tomorrow too as I only started the job two months ago.

MmeLindt I actually feel worse tonight than I did last night after I fell off - had no idea the ribs would start hurting!

It would be a good idea to pop to A&E. It does sound like you have concussion but I'm not A)medically qualified and B) good at telepathic diagnosis'. There's no harm in getting a second opinion.

I really do hope that you recover soon.

Cheers Belle Smile I think if the headache gets worse (hard to tell though, I'm on painkillers) I'll definitely head to A&E.

Just not sure if I'm being indulgent about taking tomorrow off!

See how you feel later. You'd be no good at work if you are too unwell to do the job though. I hope you feel better soon. Ibuprofen (unless you are asthmatic or allergic) should help with the pain and inflammation.

MmeLindt · 25/11/2010 17:37

I had pains from my ribs for three weeks after the accident - first week was terrible, gradually got better so that it was just when lifting things and sneezing that it hurt.

Take care of yourself and stay home an extra day.

Take tomorrow off and just rest if you can.
When I fell off my bike I had a huge bruise, cuts and was really shaken up.

Take it easy - your employers should understand.

Thanks. I got a lovely email from my Line Manager saying take whatever time I need and she'd help me with whatever I needed at her end. So I'll see how I feel in the morning.
