Has anyone got one? My GP has advised as no hormonal side effects!

Am scared shitless of anything being inserted in my "never" regions!

Please help!

Sorry, can't help but just bumping the thread up for you!

i had one between dd and ds, now have a mirena. normal coil was ok, no problems other than heavy periods. although i have to honest if you're thinking of having one. i have a mirena now because we don't want anymore babies but didn't want to go fully permanent yet with snip/sterilisation. but when i had the original copper coil removed 2 years ago, i miscarried twice before going full term with ds. it might not have been anything to do with the coil, but its always at the back of my mind that it may have been

So,sorry for being thick, but is the copper coil the old fashioned type of coil?

I have one (ie. old-fashioned, no-hormone coil). I love it and will not be parted from it.

The insertion is uncomfortable rather than painful, def. not agony and I am very squeamish. I had mine put in at 6-week check after ds and again after dd2. I did have heavy periods with it at the start, but that was more the after-effects of starting periods again, and settled down after a few months. I've had no problems with it at all.

Bad cramping?

Hi

I had a regular coil and had to have valium to have it inserted (I'm a coward) and had periods lasting at least 6/7 days and v heavy for first 3 or 4. I liked idea of no hormones though and would have been delighted to carry on if I hadn't got pregnant with coil still officially "working" on my 40th b'day...

If I had a pound for all those who have subsequently told me that they were coil babies or had had coil babies I would not exactly be rich, but I'd be able to have at least a night out on the proceeds!
I feel it is my duty to tell everyone that it's not a completely "safe" form of contraception, so if another baby would be a nightmare you might be better off with something else....

I had one put in about three months ago. It felt slightly uncomfortable, but no pain. I felt slight cramping for the rest of the day, but after that nothing. THe first period was heavy and I did get bad period pains, but the rest have been normal. I rarely think about it and am really glad I had it put in.

JiminyCricket · 22/09/2005 16:21

I had one put in today but have had one before with no probs. I didn't even feel this one go in !(but i have just had a baby). Doctor says the copper helps to stop infections, which is one possible drawback with the coils. I know lots of people are squeamish about it, but I just forget about it and think its fab easy contraception. Interesting about the 'coil babies' tho cos my friends keep telling me stories about that - the packet says its as effective as the pill.

dropinthe · 22/09/2005 16:34

Are you telling me that you got pregnant with it in? Thats it-NO WAY HOSE!
I just simply CANNOT get pregnant again!

I've got one. I think its great although periods heavy to start, they have now settled. Have had mine for about 18 months. My friend did get pregnant with one though.

Lilliput, the threads should coil round the cervix after a month or two. Be careful though my friend pulled hers out by accident, thinking in was a tampon string. Ouch!!!!

Corrin · 17/10/2005 15:38

Have just added message to wrong thread...will add to this one as well!
I have just had appt come through for GP to go for fitting on Wed...am now having second thoughts.
Used to get painful heavy periods before kids and fainted regularly.
Also faint with deep pain, am scared will faint when having it fitted.
DS6 months and had 2 periods...just had pregnancy scare and definately DO NOT want ot get pregnant, feel I need to do something more than condoms and not ready for snip conversation yet (too early) don't know what to do..have got to phone doc back today!

nailpolish · 17/10/2005 15:45

i love my coil, was painful to get inserted, but only during the insertion (felt like a few hard 'nips' but wasnt that bad) then pain like a bad period pain for about 5 days (but they gave me prescription painkillers which were great)

now i have regular periods, which are heavier but shorter lasting

because there are no hormones i can take st johns wort (like i like to do) have a good libido (is that the right word?) and have good clear skin (unlike when i was on the pill)

i can keep it in for 8 years

my dr told me it was as good as the pill, ie 99% effective, and she has never seen a pg with anyone with a copper coil

to me the good reasons to have a copper coil are there arent any horrible hormones in your body like with the pill or mirena
