Folic acid deficiency

My gp did some bloods yesterday and found I was deficient in thyroxin so I've now got my pills and am starting tomorrow.

He rang me again this evening to say he'd just had further results showing I am also deficient in folic acid and there'll be pills ready for me tomorrow afternoon at the chemist.

I do eat green veg but not as much as I want to because dh hates the stuff except for cabbage which we have quite often, and broccoli. Occasionally I'll chuck spinach into a salad.

What effect does FA deficiency have? What changes should I make in my life?

DH has threatened to trade me in for a lower-maintenance model Grin

Hi Jux - some info on folate deficiency here. My Nan has it & it's linked to her dementia. She is also deficient in B12. Folate deficiency is also linked to depression.
If you're eating fortified breakfast cereals, you'll be getting some. Also marmite & ovaltine are good sources too, so its not all bad news on the green veg front Grin

jux folate deficiency is linked to underactive thyroid and inflammatory bowel disorders. I have both of these and tend to become anaemic very easily too. You will be likely on high dose folic acid for a while and rechecked to see how your levels areSmile if you have been feeling run down and low that will improve soon once you are on your tablets.

Thanks. I don't eat breakfast cereals but maybe I'll start now. I do have marmite a few times a week so that's a plus, and I like ovaltine so I'll get some. There are other things on that list you linked to, JetLi, which I love but don't eat often enough, so I guess it's good news all round!

I have been feeling really low; in fact I went to my gp to ask for counselling as I was having a hard time coping and we agreed I wasn't actually depressed but close to it.

Amazing how things work out, really isn't it? I'd blamed all my symptoms on ms and thought there was little could be done about them. My gp only took my bloods as he noticed my voice had gone husky so he thought he'd check my thyroid. I wonder if he'll phone me tomorrow with something else?! Grin What a wunnerful man Smile
