My poor ds had unplanned surgery on Monday for abscess/fistula

To drain and excise an anorectal abscess and lay open a fistula. Was just an awful day, really wasn't expecting the paed surgeon to say he wanted to operate that day under general. I was so pathetic, in a complete state, bawled my eyes out, especially when he was being put out

Back home now after horrendous sleepless night in hospital. DS seems to be OK - I'm terrified his wound will become infected as they just leave it open and unstitched to heal from inside to out. A bit housebound too as have to be near a bath as he needs sitz baths 3 times aday and after every poo. He's such a wriggler at the best of times, it is nigh on impossible to get his dressing on when his bum is so sore [sad[/ Don't suppose anyone has any similar experience?

thanks everyone.

Lockets - he's OK except when he does a poo and has to have a bath, then he's in a lot of pain . Have also had to out dd's rubber swim ring in his high chair, car seat, buggy as it's uncomy for him to sit. Surgeon said it would take two weeks to heal.

Yes, visit tomorrow would be lovely. Afternoon?

yes, whenever

no - there is still a 2-4% chance it will. As opposed to 100% now that we know he definitely did have a fistula.

oh god.......
hope he gets better soon. and hope you have lots of strentgh to see him and yourself throught this tough time.
not quite the same, but ds's were circumsised, general anesthetic each time. they were a lot hardier than the doctors thought theyd be. i was told with both of them that they would probly be lying down for a few days, but both were up and running round as usualwithin a few hours of surgery. and coz they were in nappies at the time, was easier to keep it clean.
lot s of positive thoughts.

hunkermunker · 21/09/2005 22:43

Oh, poor darling boy

And of course, poor you

I suppose the very tiniest of comforts is that you didn't have time to worry about him having the surgery for weeks, but it must've been a huge shock to hear he was to be operated on immediately.

I really, really hope that this is it now and he heals up really quickly and it never recurs.

thanks Stitch - ds was up the next day, just a bit wobblier than usual... Just really was not expecting surgeon to say they wanted to operate (as he first had one at 6 months and they treated it conservatively, let nature take its course) This time was different as the problem obviously hadn't gone away and so they had to try and find the fistula. It is so awful when you have to hold them while they'r going under, isn't it? don't think the memory will ever leave me.

yes, Hunker, dh was relieved in a way as we didn't have to worry about surgery for ages in advance. am amazed surgeon managed to find the fistula as the reg said it's prob be two ops - one for the immediate abscess and one when it had healed, to lay open the fistula. clever surgeon to do both (HOPEFULLY).

God, have to say I was SO pleased to still be bfing him as it made me feel I was able to give him comfort and was so easy when we were staying in hospital (for getting him back to sleep whenever he stirred with all the noise going on). And he's quite off his food still, so is feeding lots more than usual.

Oh Dinny I really feel for you. When my Ds had his tonsils out Dh said the worst bit for him was holding him as he went under. It's the worst feeling seeing your children go through ops. Thank goodness it's over - hoping he makes a good recovery. Thinking of you.

hunkermunker · 21/09/2005 22:52

I just remember how worried I was about DS going for his DMSA kidney scan - not that he had to be sedated for that in the end, but I couldn't be with him for the worst bit and that was appalling, so upsetting

I'm glad DS is still soothed by bfeeding - very, very handy! And I hope the surgeon was really that good - will be fab if DS only needs one op.

dinny · 21/09/2005 22:54

it feels like an eternity, ds fought so much. I kept trying to say "nighty night, darling" in a normal voice so he'd think he was in his cot, just going to sleep normally but my voice kept breaking down. it was awful... he did pass out failry fast as he was screaming so much - anaesthetist said if they struggle a lot, they go faster as they take deeper breaths.
