Hot flushes, how long will HRT take to sort them out?

I am going to try to get an appt with our GP for ASAP. The last couple of days have been hideous. I haven't seen a period for about 5 months and so far in 2010 I've had 3. It is the hot flushes that have been getting me down (and making me get out of bed at 23.40).
I am 46 years old, my only DD is 9.6 and I have a DH of a similar age to myself. I am so hoping a doctor will help me.
Any experiences? I get that awful creeping heat sensation around 20 times a day, and it also wakes me up Sad Angry

ppeafruit- not all HRT is made from horse urine. I use HRT in the form of oestrogen gel and it is pure estodiol- not from horses, but from plants. Premarin is made from horses urine but it is only one of the hundreds of kinds of HRT avaailable. I don't kno anything about your sister, adn i am sorry she was ill, but it is possible to develop BC and be on HRT but for the 2 not to be connected.

Herbs work for some people but nothing is as effective as HRT. I was lucky because I found a type which suited me straight off- with gel, you use as much or as little as you need to control your symptoms. I also have a top-notch gynae who really knows his stuff and who I see privately.

The verdict on HRT now is that if you begin it early- at 50-ish (or younger if you have an early meno)and continue for 5 years then you have a very minimal risk of side effects.

All i know is the medics took her off the HRT immediately (maybe they found some in the tumour) It was years ago it sounds like the HRT has improved now.

Kreecher green wees after eating asparagus yes Not otherwise! IMO

ppeatfruit, BC is generally hormone driven. The GP I saw said I would need to have a mamogram and smear before she started me on it, despite having had one of each in May.

kreacher
some BC is hormone receptive but not all.

There is a risk of BC after a number of years and your dr is being very careful by asking you to have a mammo first etc- that is not normal practice in the UK.

My gynae recommends I have a mammo every 18 months- 2 years rather than the usual 3 years.

Sorry, purple, you are right. Some is some isn't. My GP is being very careful, I wonder if there is a kickback for her from the clinic I need to go to Hmm. I am a very suspicious old cynic.

You are right to be cynical kreech Smile maybe the bark and twigs will sort you out, also Evening primrose oil is very good.

PrettyCandles · 30/11/2010 22:43

Ppeatfruit - it could be that your sister's BC was the sort that is stimulated by oestrogen. It doesn't necessarily mean that the HRT caused it, but the oestrogen would make it worse.

Kreecher - caution is a good thing. My GP wanted to make sure that my fibroid was nothing more than a fibroid, and that it wasn't masking anything else. So refering me for a scan made sense.

Hi, I have been having major hot flushes but feeling horrible nausea and palpation's and when closing my eyes going dizzy, not sure if they are related to menopause as I have been having them on and off for months, I have been really down due to those symptoms and feel the doctors has not got a clue, as he stuck me on omeprazole and sickness pill , just had a Hysterectomy 9 days ago due to a very large fibroid and started taking Estradol Valerate 2mg 6 days ago, any help on how long the hrt will kick in and are those symptoms menopausal (THE HOT FLUSHES), any help much appreciated

digerd · 05/01/2013 18:15

The menopause hit me overnight, the following day. at 48. I did not have hot flushes during the day, only at night, but I had terrible nightmares and agonising pain in my back at night. But all started on that one day, when suddenly I felt as if I was moving in slow motion - or like I couldn't get out of 1sr gear. Been fine all morning gardening in the heat, and sat down under an apple tree for a break. It was when I got up and tried to carry on that I noticed this weird slowness and heavy legs. The night stuff began soon after, and the legs became weaker and heavier. Also my brain became muzzy.
HRT improved all of that - immediately with me.

Hi everyone I don't know if this is the right way of bringing this thread back to life or not. Would anyone know about HRT and acne please? Only taken Premarin for 6 days so far but my skin is suddenly really bad. Is this normal? Thanks folk. (The flushes I think are reducing in frequency I'd say)
