prob follow his advice if it doesn't improve then you can have steroid injections to help

snowmash · 17/11/2010 18:31

Good luck lozza - it's good that you're getting treatment.

I have a 3" keloid across the top of my breast, but other than being an educational tool (I now know which ethic groups they are more common in), my docs aren't inclined to treat (for me it's the pain/itch etc) because it will have to be reopened repeatedly anyway (causing more keloid formation).

itsatiggerday · 17/11/2010 18:35

Good that it's been picked up. It is potentially worth getting a second opinion if they do end up advocating drastic other options, there is quite some debate over how to manage them for the best outcome. Hope the cream helps you anyway.

Oh, and watch other minor injuries - burns, cuts etc - if you do keloid scar, the most common areas are in a Y shape of your arms, upper torso, shoulders etc so any minor injuries in these may also heal this way and the sooner they're seen, potentially the better for minimising the discomfort.

I have one on my leg that i was told they could do nothing for and they refuse to remove it saying that i am likely to end up with another anyway. I scar really badly and the slightest cut scars. Although there is not ethinical reason why. I shouldnt be prone to these scars based on ethical group. can you report back if the scar dressings actually work as might consider this for mine.

CMOTdibbler · 17/11/2010 20:10

I've been using cica-care which is a silicon scar dressing, and it has really improved mine. You do have to wear it 24 hrs for best improvement, but worth it

DancingIceReindeer · 17/11/2010 20:40

Does the improvement last or is it something you have to repeat to see the same level of improvement?

CMOTdibbler · 17/11/2010 20:45

Apparently it lasts. Not sure how it works, but a couple of the scars which were really dented in have pulled right out and don't go back, and others look much flatter and are more mobile

I have a keloid scar on my shoulder, that i have had for about 15 years now.

I was prescribed those silicon dressings, but they did nothing for me.

The thing that worked best was steroid injections, they really flattened down the bulkiness of the scar and one it was as flat as it could be without thinning the skin too much, I had dye(sp?)laser treatment which took away the purpliness of it. All this treatment toook years and years, but the scar is really flat and silvery now.

I have keloid scars for 2 cs and one on the top of one boob from having a manky mole taken off.

After 17 years they have all faded but still all stick up, I've just got used to them, I didn't know anything could be done about them. just thought thats the way I seem to heal.

ThingOne · 17/11/2010 21:06

I've tried a variety of things. Colourwise I'm a very pale (but not quite transparent) white skinned redhead.

I had some small keloids on my chest which have flattened entirely after using a normal transparent medical dressing on them constantly for over six months. They went flat after about three months but I had to keep the dressing on longer for its original purpose. 18 months after this they have faded quite well. They weren't at all itchy this summer.

I have a six inch one on my tummy which has had a little bit of silicon dressing (but it wont stay on properly) and lots of massaging with oil. It was still a bit itchy this summer but definitely bearable.

My most recent keloid is twelve inches long and on my leg! It's so chunky I've been prescribed steroid cream and silicon tape. I started massaging it with oil as soon as it was healed enough, and vigorously as soon as I could after that. I used the steroid cream for a couple of weeks but it was very strong and bleached my skin. It did, however, make an incredible difference in this short time. I'm now trying tape but I can't keep the bloody stuff on! It's only six months old so early days.

I have a huge keloid scar running from my bra line down to my knicker line - lovely Hmm

Mine is 24 years old but I can still remember the terrible tightness when it was newer. In fact, to be totally frank with you, I could not lie on my stomach for years afterwards without the top bit of it pulling terribly - as if it was attached to a string and someone was pulling the string.

The good news is, this tightness does ease eventually. The bad news is, it can take years and years.

The redness also fades. My scar is now not much darker than my surrounding skin. The raisedness also reduces. In fact, my scar is now more indented than raised.

I recall having some steroid cream to rub in and lanolin was also suggested although that is very greasy and quite messy. Unfortunately, a few weeks into my scar, I got some huge blisters on it which there is little sign of now, but I was never sure what caused them and I suppose it could have been caused by the creams I was using.
