Heavy periods

I have started to get the occasional heavy period. I am 39 and usually my periods are quite light and not really painful.
Over the last year or so I have had more painful periods but then the occasional 'gush' as it were.
My period started the day before yesterday and was fairly uncomfortable yesterday, today things seemed better and not too heavy. However this evening has been really heavy.
I put a tampon in and an hour later I stood up and I had leaked every where.
I do have a GP apt next week and will mention it then but has anyone got any ideas or experiences to enlighten me until then.
Thank you

My periods have always been really heavy, so not the same. If there is a change I think it would be wise to mention.

Happened to me just at about your age. I am 43 now and have had to have a mirena coil fitted due to heavy periods. The bleeding made me anaemic, and quite ill, unable to do even normal day to day things.
While I have gained a few extra pounds my life is so much better now I don't have periods any more.
The doc will probably do some blood tests and send you for a check up at the womens department so they can ahve a look and do an ultrasound scan.
I did try tablets to stop the bleeding but they became less effective.
Good luck with the GP

Yes I would mention it to your GP, it's probably nothing to worry about as people's cycles do change as they get older, but I'd still mention it.

When mine were bad my GP gave me some tablets to take to reduce the flow, they really worked.

I've got a mirena coil now which I know people on here moan about, but it was the answer for me I don't even get periods now.

wow cross post purpleGrin

Does the Mirena coil stop you having periods then?
I have pretty heavy periods, so much so that I worry about leaving the house for the first two days.

Schroeder what tablets were you prescribed?

Schroeder · 16/11/2010 20:20

I can't remember what they were called sorry it was a few years ago.

The mirena coil doesn't stop periods for everyone, but it has for me; I occaisionly get a little spotting, but not enough to use any protection. I did bleed fairly constantly for the first 6 weeks, but it wasn't very heavy.

Pannacotta that sounds pretty bad, have you seen the GP about it?

Pannacotta · 16/11/2010 21:07

Thanks Schroeder, yes I have seen my GP, I had a blood test and was found to be quite badly anaemic. I am taking Floradix now but my periods are still far too heavy (mooncup plus super pads and still leaking on clothes/PJs etc).
I should probably go back, my GP was not very interested but I suppose I should push harder for some help. Not too keen on the idea of the coil though (I don't need contraception as DH has had the snip).

OP I would definately see your GP and get some advice.

topsi · 17/11/2010 07:54

thanks for all the advice, it is a bit wierd bacause I seem to have a normal period with a sudden 1-2 hour 'gush' in the middle.
Maybe I have a fibriod, my mum suffered from them.

yes, its probably a fibroid, does cause "flooding" - my GYN said that its to be expected in older women.

GP may prescribe transexamic acid to reduce flow.

I have just had a mirena fitted and Im hopeful that this will do the trick
