Blood Clot on Lung, how serious is this?

DS has a blood clot on her lung which is causing breathing problems, is in hospital now waiting several hours for a scan, how serious is this and what are the chances of a full recovery?

It's serious, but she is in hospital and they know about the problem.

A friend (adult) had this and he has recovered fine. It took a few months on some tablets he didn't enjoy but he is now fine.

A very worrying time for you and lots of hugs and I hope that your DS (DD? you she her as well as DS) recovers well. Everything crossed.

I have had this a few times, mainly when Pregnant, its fixable as long as they catch it (which they have!) She will probably need to be on Clexane, Warfin or Heparin for a while, is she pregnant? It can happen during pregnancy as the blood thickens.
She will be closley monitored but it will be fine. Smile

Thankyou for your replies, very helpful, my sister had a chest x-ray but then they decided she needed to have a scan, she was waiting over 3 hours for the scan the last time I spoke to her. Hopefully they have given her some treatment, are keeping her in overnight. She could hardly walk without becoming breathless, she has had DVT in her leg before but looks like this has travelled to her lungs. She is'nt pregnant but is very over-weight. I just hope she will be ok, seeing her struggling to walk today was very distressing, she's only 40.

I had DVT (which can lead to PE back at the beginning of this year. The Drs take it very seriously. It is well managed as others have said if caught on time but it can also cause some damage to the lung. If she had a DVT before there is a hihg chance that is what it is. Hope she recovers soon :)

Ps ; if she has had more than one clot at a young age she will probably be tested for APS as I am being which is an autoimmune disorder that causes the blood to clot too easily. I was just 29 when I had my DVT.
As the others said they will put her on heparin for a few days and then onto warfarin which may have to be long term now.As long as she takes them properly she should be fine.

I had multiple lung clots after my ds was born. She's very lucky they've caught it - P.Es (pulmonary embolisms) can be very painful (in my case worse than childbirth I swear) and impair breathing but even more worryingly they can move and can be fatal if they move towards the heart. She will be fine now.

If her experience is anything like mine, they will blast her with some heavy duty blood thinning injections for about a week, maybe keeping her in hospital, and then she will probably be on warfarin tablets for say 6 months going for frustratingly frequent blood checks to attempt to get the dosage right. I've since tested negative for thrombophilia but had to inject daily with clexane when pregnant with DD to be sure to avoid clotting again.

A worrying time for all of you, but they've caught it in time. Here's to a speedy recovery

Treacle how long after your LO was born did you get them? I got mine about 3 months after so they don't think it was the pregnancy.(do they give it 8 weeks after or something?) Also did you know you had a DVT before your PE (Pain in calf etc?) Tested positive once for ANA and LA antibodies but waiting for aother test.

treacletart · 17/11/2010 17:27

I got my PEs just 2 weeks after Ds's lightening fast unplanned home birth (with retained placenta that had to be removed surgically) I had absolutely no inkling of any dvt or unexplained pain beforehand - to be honest I thought Id sprained my shoulder and I was really lucky that the doctor on call I'd phoned through NhS direct insisted on sending an ambulance. Everyone seems pretty convinced it was preganacy/birth related. Good luck with the tests BB - so much better to know and be able to prevent something horrid happening.

Thanks Treacle. Must have been a big shock. I waited 2 weeks before getting mine checked out as thought it was sprained muscle.
Hope your little one is doing finw now! :)
