Anyone ever had bursitis in the hip?

I had my first bout a few weeks ago which was absolute agony. I was prescribed anti inflammatories for 2 weeks which I finished and then about 2 weeks after that the pain has crept back.

It's not as bad but still uncomfortable so I've been back to Dr and got 4 weeks of anti-inflammatories. The next stage is to have a cortisone injeection which I'm dreading as I had 2 into my shoulder which were very painful.

Has anyone else had this, and has it gone away after treatment, or is it a long term thing that comes and goes? I'd be really grateful for any suggestions on how to relieve the pain as I don't want to take painkillers on a long term basis.

Yes, I have it. I know that mine isn't infected (DH had bursitis on his elbow and ended up in hospital on IV anti-biotics), so I now take neurofen when it gets bad and rest. It was really bad before I had children (and still had private medical insurance) and I had a course of physio which involved both ultrasound and acupuncture and did help together with the exercises my physio gave me.

I've had it for probably seven years on and off and live with it, but I thought it was probably just an extension of my other mobility problems.

So, sorry that I can't be more positive, but hope you feel better soon.

Yes. From trying to change my running gait to quickly. It went away quite quickly with paracetamol and ibugel. I'm sorry that yours is so much worse though.

Yes!

Mine came on 2 weeks ago and I had a pain killing and antiinflamatory injection for it.

I couldnt walk, it was horrid.

It did get better but it started aching again yesterday but I am trying to ignore it at the mo as I have a very busy week ahead!!

I second the nurofen advice!

Right, looks like a bulk buy of nurofen then!

I have had this and the injection DID help.

Also, I have been shown some good stretching exercises so help the muscles as I have a permanent "snapping hip" which occassionally aggravates into a bursitis. These are very effective and help cut down on the need for Diclofenac.

I have this in both hips.

Really hurts but having the Injections help and gentle exercise is good along with rest, and I do try not to rely on Diclofenac and co-codamals, but its a case of slowing down and resting!

becaroo · 11/11/2010 17:39

I am so glad its not my imagination that this hurts!!!

I went to bed fine 2 weeks ago and woke up in agony and couldnt weight bear on my right leg at all!!! Thought I was benig a wimp!

Would physio help do you think? I am with bupa so could get that privately I think Hmm

DarciesmumandTTC2 · 11/11/2010 17:56

I have physio & hydrotherapy only because I have fibromyalgia along with bursitis so it helps thru flare ups, you can just do some gentle exercises and rest it should be fine.

As you're with BUPA I'd get your GP to refer you to a local physio - there might even be one attached to your surgery. As it's already been paid for you might as well take advantage of it.
