A bit embarrassed... Rectal bleeding

Regular who has name changed!

I have been having bowel problems for a few months now Blush For a while it ranged between diarrhoea and constipation on an almost weekly basis. That seemed to clear up a little while ago, though I started having pain and a little bleeding when going for a poo. Not much, so I guessed I must have piles, applied some cream for a little while and kind of ignored it.

But it hasn't gone away, and it seems to have got worse. There was a gush of blood the other night (sorry for TMI but seeing as I'm sharing..!) so that there was more blood than anything else in the toilet. Its bright red blood.

I don't think its piles, seeing as I;m not in pain at any other time, and when i had piles after DC was born I could hardly sit down. After I go to the loo it hurts for a few minutes, but not too bad. I've also been having some abdominal pains.

After the rather scary bleed on Sunday I've booked a doctors appointment for Thursday, but I wondered if people could share some encouraging comments / stories / advice / remind me not to google please.

It's probably nothing serious, but I think you're doing the right thing by going to see the doc, to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

I get a bit of this now and again, I put it down to an excema type problem that I aggravate when I wipe. But what happened on Sunday sounds like more than a bit of a graze / scratch, so see what the GP says.

Hope it goes well.

my dad had an anal fissure which is like a split in the skin inside your bum - he had a lot of bleeding and it kept almost healing then coming back - in the end he had a small proceedure to repair it and is now careful with keeping his bowel movements soft and regular and very careful when wiping

flushblush · 08/11/2010 20:45

Blushingm, that sounds a but like it - it tends to get better for a bit (on days when I don't have a movement, normally) then gets bad again. Is your dad okay now?

Thank you both.

sounds like IBS

fresh red blood is actually not as scary in terms of possible diagnosis as dark blood in poo

i reckon after you've had a few problesm and alternate diaorrhea/constipation etc. bit of bleeding, prob IBS

be brave!

i saw the doc with severe symptoms incl bleeding ( like water, i was bleeding that much!) ill, pain like labour , couldnb't keep water in my system , lost 10 lbs in a week...

i had myself dead and buried

I have crohns disease, not pleasant, but i have meds when i need them and the problems under control

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/11/2010 20:49

Just want to wish you well, flush. Hope your appointment goes okay and that it gets sorted quickly.

KarenHL · 08/11/2010 20:53

See the Doc. My personal experience is that seeing Doc, or hospital consultant is better than your imagination! Whatever you do, don't self-diagnose. If you do need to see a dietician at any point, it might save time if you write up a food/symptom diary before your appointment.

I had v.similar symptoms. Ended up having hospital tests, eventually diagnosed with IBS and put on a low-fibre diet. Has helped massively and is pretty much under control ATM.

blushingm · 08/11/2010 20:55

yes my dad is absolutely fine now - his dad died of stomach cancer and at first he was really scared he had it too but it ended up being something very simple and very common

flushblush · 08/11/2010 21:10

Thanks all, appreciate it.

Bright red blood is less likely to be serious than old blood, according to my GP. It's likely to be an anal fissure or IBS, but see the doctor and check.

silentcatastrophe · 09/11/2010 09:26

It sounds horrible. I was diagnosed with Colitis a few years ago. The pain got worse and worse. Yuck. It felt less dignified than giving birth. I hope you get it sorted soon and feel better.

Constance39 · 09/11/2010 18:58

IBS won't cause bleeding. That's pretty important.

You could have one of several things, and it's good you're seeing your GP...try not to worry, bright red blood is usually from the lower end of the tract, so less of a worry than dark blood.

It could be an infection, causing colitis. It could be an inflammatory condition as has been mentioned, such as Ulcerative colitis or crohns...these can often be successfully controlled.

You may have a tear or fissure, or you could have polyps or similar growths which can be removed.

You will probably have a brief examination to rule out anything obvious, and then be referred to have a coloscopy or similar, which basically passes a small camera up your bum to check for anything unusual. You can have sedation for this and apparently it's not horrid at all, though you'll have to take laxatives the day before.

I hope it goes well for you and you get an answer soon...it sounds like you've been worried for long enough! Good luck.

Constance39 · 09/11/2010 19:00

Also, they WILL ask you if you're certain it isn't just your period! They always ask that..

ThingOne · 09/11/2010 20:47

It probably will be "nothing" but my fresh red blood indicated a rectal tumour. Even the GPs ignored the fresh red blood ...

So get yourself sorted my dear!

flushblush · 09/11/2010 21:41

Thank you for the encouragement. I really am very anxious. Am terrified and humiliated at the idea of anyone looking at my bum - you'd have though I would have go over then when I gave birth, wouldn't you, really? Hmm at self. The idea of a colonoscopy (sp?) just makes me shudder.

I'm hoping just to be told that I have piles, but it feels so different I don't think it is.

I know, it is a horrible feeling knowing something so private has to be investigated.

I hope it all is easier than you think xx

Haggisfish · 12/11/2010 17:17

How did it go flushblush?

Northernlurker · 12/11/2010 17:30

I hope you've got on ok. It's really important to do as you are doing and get this checked out. There are (as listed below)loads of possibles and the doctors you will ee spend their whole lives dealing with this body part! Seeing the doctor is how you move forward to feeling better - you've done really well to make the appointment and I hope all continues in a very straightforward fashion.

Elibean · 12/11/2010 19:21

Hope you're ok. Bit late to be telling you this, but when I had a small anal fissure (that bled) it felt nothing like external piles (that hurt). No pain, just a bit of stinging when pooing.

Hope you've been reassured, xx
