Diorrhea and Eczema

Hello everyone. My 21m dd developed persistant diorrhea at about 1 year and also eczema. We excluded cows milk which cleared up the eczema and then gluten (there's a history of Coeliac Disease in my family) which sorted the diorrhea out. But they're both back with a vengenance! The last 2 months have seen me analysing her diet, thinking it may be related to the heat/a heavy cold/swimming pool water.... but I can't put my finger on it. We get on average 2 very large bowel movements (sorry!) per day, and she has bad eczema patches behind her knees and generally her body feels very dry, she also has a persistant wheeze which has never cleared up - I'm convinced they're all related. Any ideas?

she could be allergic to something else. if she is wheezing then take her to the doctors. any breathing problems should be dealt with quickly. the swimming pool could affect her eczema if clorinated.
if she is an atopic child then its very likely that the problems u are describing are interlinked. my dd1 has 2 different types of eczema (atopic and something else which i can never catch the name of when the consultant mentions it), asthma and has allergic reactions all over the place.
what traetment do u use for the eczema? have u tried cutting out diary all together (consult a doctor b4 u do this).
do u have any pets? they could be the reason u're dd is wheezing and has dry skin. look at your washing powder, is it non-bio? do u wash at 60degrees to get rid of dustmites? have u got anti allergy bedding? had she got a lot of soft toys on her bed/in her room?
waffling, can u tell i'm getting into my stride lol.

Check your fabric softener too - eg Comfort Pure goves DS2 and a friend's child eczema whereas Tescos Pure does not. There isn't a complete ingredient list to check what the difference is. Of course, this won't help her bowel problems

misdee · 18/08/2003 21:27

or just avoid fabric conditioner. thats what i do.

I too have found Comfort Pure gives me and ds sensitive skin (not as severe as eczema but still uncomfortable).

Surcare fabric conditioner we've found good.

i agree with misdee - cut out the fabric conditioner and use a very simple washing liquid (not powder which can leave more residues) like fairy non-bio

woodge, I was told by our consultant paed derm at gt ormond street that children under two often had milk/wheat allergies, but that once over about two these allergies were quite rare (something to do with their gut maturing). He said that if the eczema changed/got worse etc around that age, that they should be retested for allergies and the eczema looked at again and maybe the regimen you are on changed. don't know if this will be helpful in your case, but thought I'd pass it on. Also if she is doing lots of swimming in chlorinated water, this inevitably makes the ezcema worse and skin generally drier....
