I had chicken pox when i was 9 weeks pregnant (caught from son in nursery).
I knew I would catch it from son, but doctor made me have a blood test to prove I had no immunity, before i was able to have an immunoglobulin injection (to try to stave off a chicken pox attack). This injection has to be given within 10days of exposure.
I still came out in chicken pox but suspect i had it more mildly than i might have, had i not had the injection.
Effects on unborn children if you catch chicken pox when pregnant, are very rare (i did lots of research)......however if you are unlucky, the child could be severely damaged.
Chicken pox in adults can be very serious, and can lead to breathing difficulties. Many patients need to be hospitalised as there are often breathing complications.
I suspect the vaccine is not given here mainly due to cost implications.
My advice to anyone who is 100% they did not have the pox as a child is if you plan to have children........pursue the vaccine from your GP and be clear with them as per your reasoning for wanting it.
If you are not planning on having any/more children (as per the OP) i would not pursue the vaccine, however if you do come into contact with the pox, be vigilent that you may have been exposed and pursue the immunoglobulin injection from your doctor (and be quick about it as there is a small window of time that the immunoglubulin must be taken)
BTW - my daughter was born normal and I watch with interest to see if she is immune to the pox. If not, I will encourage her to be vaccinated so she does not have the worry I did.
