i started on flagyl (metronidazole) tablets on tuesday for an infection but my symptoms arent any better yet. Just wondered if anyone else has experince of how soon to expect the antibiotic to work? My swabs came back negative for chlamidia and whatever other std the dr was checking for so I'm assuming I just have what is called bacterial vaginosis. Not itchy or burny just lots of watery discharge which doesnt smell good and quite different to my usual.

Metronidazole is the standard treatment for BV and from how you describe your symptoms, that sounds exactly like what you have. Normally it takes at least a few days for an infection to clear up once antibiotics have commenced, but it is vital that the whole course of antibiotics is taken, just to make sure all of the bad bacteria is killed (even though the symptoms may disappear sooner). The problem with BV is that it can be quite resistant and can come back even a few days after the antibiotics have been finished, which is a real pain. But see how you get on. To help things along, avoid all soaps and vaginal washes from the area (despite being tempted to try and 'wash away' the smell, it will only mke it worse). Hopefully it your symptoms will go very soon.

I never use soap anyway - it causes an outbreak of thrush every time. For years now I have used a lactic acid wash thingy - it should be ok to use shouldnt it? Its probably the lack of acidity due to not havig a cycle at the moment (bfing) which has contributed to this happening I would say. Oh I really hope it isnt one these resistant to clearing up infections -what a PITA!

Arrgh - looks like it is going to be one of the resistant ones, only one day of pills left and symptoms still no better!
Does anyone know what the gp is likely to advise - more antibiotics/bigger dose or whatever?
Was wondering if there ar any alternatives like could I kill it off by eating a huge amount of garlic or whatever? Hope that doesnt sound silly -I'm open to suggestions though.

my gp told me to take acidophillus pills to help prevent infection. Although I'm a big fan of probiotics for the kids I hadn't been taking them myself until then I've read of people putting live yoghurt there but I didn't feel like trying that myself Gp also said just to use water to wash and non biological detergent for clothes. I'd guess if it persists you'd get a different antibiotic.

The acidophulus should be a good idea anyway as the anitbiotics have killed off the good gut flora and I now have diarrhoea as well!
