i obtained a copy of dd's medical notes, and cant really understand what exactly the MRI scan results of her foot mean?

PLEASE can anyone tell me in "normal" terms what this means exactly?

MR LEFT FOOT : a band of marrow oedema is present in the posterior calcaneum just below the cartilage, extending anteriorly into the body of the calcaneum. a small focal irregularity is seen at the posterior osseous margin. a small amount of oedema is present in the subcutaneous tissues of the heel. the tendons, muscles and other bones demonstrate normal appearances.

the calcaneal marrow oedema is consistent with a focal intrinsic pathology and would account for the patients symptoms. appearances are not compatible with tumour and given the history injury seems unlikely.

on balance therefore a low grage chronic infection seems most likely.

i was wondering what the mention of tumour is referring to, and also the mention of "history injury"....

really need someone to help me out with this

no probs, hope you feel better after speaking to your gp

happymerryberries · 17/09/2005 13:15

Lilsmum, please don't think that I am belitting your worry in any way. I only mentioned the tumour thing because in your original posting you asked what the mention of the tumour is refering to. I know what it is like to worry all the time, I honestly do, my dh has leukemia.

What I don't want is for you to worry more. You asked what the report was all about in laymans terms and I hoped that by tellign you I would help to make you feel a little better about this. I can see that I havn't and this was never my intention. I'm sorry for this and will now bow out as I just seem to be making you feel worse

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:15

meant SC, told you my head is up my bum lol. x

lilsmum, I think you've had some constructive and useful replies here from people who do know what they're talking about. You need to say thank you imo and stop worrying! You don't need a doctor or a nurse imo, I've just read the thread and it really sounds like nothing to worry about. If you're that worried, call NHS direct or your own GP's out of hours service.

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:17

HMB...sorry to hear about your DH

i will just go my GP on monday, just a while ago i posted about dd's foot, and spoke to someone called DOCINCOGNITO...and they were really helpful.

Lilsmum-I trained as a doctor but no longer practice. I am not an orthopaedic surgeon either. What the nurses on here have told you is absolutely right. Your daughter obviously has had an infection which when acute caused her pain on walking. The fact that she is now able to walk indicates that the infection is resolving and the MRI report confirms that there is a localised infection which is not involving any of her other bones, muscles etc. I expect the surgeons are reluctant to put a toddler through painful surgery when the signs are that her body is fighting off the infection by itself. Please please be reassured that there is nothing else which should be being done at the moment. You are being a great mum by being concerned about it all and you know your child better than anyone - if you feel she is not improving or have any other worries do get back to your GP or the orthopaedic team. BTW these types of infections can take a while to resolve.

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:28

KATEF...thanks for that, but i think this thread should be ignored now, as i obviously am not allowed to ask to speak to a doctor or nurse before running it past certain MN'ers first.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 17/09/2005 13:30

Fine, post what you like lilsmum but I'm entitled to my opinion too and several people have tried to help you only for you to ask to speak to a doctor or nurse. (um, this is the internet, anyone can say they're a doctor or nurse! Although I am sure that most mnetters are genuine) If you don't care what I think, fine, ignore me, it doesn't bother me! And starting a thread doesn't give you the right to say who/what can and can't be posted I'm afraid. If you're that worried, you should get off the internet and call NHS Direct/your GP/go to A&E.

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:32

www...not interested, just dont speak to me like i am a child... ok?

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 17/09/2005 13:35

I didn't speak to you like you're a child. But I really, really don't care about you/this thread enough to argue about it.

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:37

well then why post?!?!?!?

go and post about grapes, stick to what you know...

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 17/09/2005 13:41

Now who's childish lilsmum?

lilsmum · 17/09/2005 13:45

OP posts:
jampots · 17/09/2005 13:45

lilsmum - she was only trying to help!

spacecadet · 17/09/2005 13:45

hey hey calm down everyone, lilsmum, i think feels a little more reassured and will speak to her gp, i think that should be the end of it now.

dropinthe · 17/09/2005 13:47

LM-I think what you really didn't appreciate about WWWs comment is being told to say Thank you,eh?

Buddhamummy · 17/09/2005 13:51

Hi Lilsmum

I do work as a nurse in orthopaedics but dont have much more to add as i think Katef has given some really good advice.

But... what i do know is that it is very frustrating not having medical jargon explained to us.We feel powerless and scared especially when its about our little ones who are completeley dependent on us. Every hospital and gp service has to by law now adhere to a "plain english" charter.ie:no jargon!
DEMAND that your GP explains it in laymans terms until you are satisfied you understand what it means dont leave the room until you have resilved it. Mumsnet is about supporting each other and we all deal differently with situations, so dont feel you cant come back to thread if you feel alone, ill be here. x
