99 year olds and hip surgery

I know this is going to sound incredulous - but can a 99 year old with emphysemia and poor health survive long after a hip operation?

I am watching an elderly relative recover from a plate and pin hip operation and subsequent blood transfusion today and wondering if there is any possibility she will survive. What is the procedure for the elderly after such an operation? Therapy to get them walking? What happens if they can't? Blood clots? If all goes well, how long would hospital stay be? I know these questions should be asked of hospital staff, but they are rushed off their feet and I dont want to waste their time.

I assume she had the surgery because she had broken the hip? They will operate on pretty much anyone with a fractured hip because mortality is 100% if they don't (with the exception of some minor fractures). Obviously at 99, her chances of surviving the next few months are relatively low in any case, but they are better with surgery than without it.

The physios will try to get her on her feet in the next few days. She will be given a blood-thinning injection to reduce the risk of clots.

Some patients will be out of hospital in a few days but, at 99, realistically I'd expect a stay of a couple of weeks.

I'd suggest taking her some nice food to eat (proper food, not choccies etc) - NHS food is crap and good nutrition will help her chances.

They will have a structured rehabilitation process. It is a very personal thing and will depend on the person's existing health and personal motivation.

My Grandad recovered pretty much 100% after his hip op. My nana has never walked again.

They do a lot of community rehab as well so its not all in hospital, makes it more flexible and my Grandad really benefitted from support in his own home.

My grandparents were late 90s when they broke their hips and my nana has dementia which obviously had a huge impact on her recovery.

My mil has lung problems so she did not have a ga but had a spinal block instead for both of her hip ops.
