Mouth ulcers - help !

Hazellnut · 15/09/2005 21:45

DH is plagued constantly from mouth ulcers and it is driving us both mad (him the pain and discomfort, me the fact he always has to talk funny and feel sorry for himself !!).

Anyone got any good prevention ideas ?

Not sure about prevention, but I find the most soothing remedy and for the fastest recovery, swish warm salt water around for 30 seconds or so. Repeat regularly.

my specialised subject...
sometimes can be set off by ingredients in toothpaste - sodium lauryl sulphate and triclosan.

also might be something he's eating, might be worth keeping a food diary.

try vitamin B supplement and more zinc (bananas?)

anbesol makes the pain bearable.

Adcortyl in Orabase is the only thing I have found to help them heal but it is a osrt of grainy paste, and it can be hard to make it stick IYSWIM. best to put it in after food and try not to eat/drink for a while, and last thing at night.

has he been to the dentist to get his nouth checked out?

every sympathy, they are bloody miserable.

HTH

salt water thing does help too

I'd heard this about the toothpaste - anyone know a brand that doesn't contain this ? By the sounds of it he is already using the pasty stuff and i know it does help when he remembers to use it (doesn't really help himself !!!!). Will also try and get him some supplements. I think the main cause is stress/tiredness as he works long hours but just thought something might help other than giving up work !!!!!! And he can't do that cos then I'd have to go back to work

Thanks for all the advice.

The paste stuff is excellent once you have an ulcer. I find it sticks well if you dry the area as much as poss before applying, e.g. just wipe it with your finger. As a preventative, I've found corsodyl excellent. It's a mouthwash from the chemist. It stings a bit, even if you don't have ulcers, but I have hardly suffered since doing it for a while.

Hazellnut, the Weleda toothpastes are all natural, no nasties in them. You'll get them in a chemist that sells homeopathic type things. Hth.

For quick relief as well, try Difflam spray. Also aloclair (i think) spray quite good. Both in chemists.

Thanks - think I will get dh to use all of these - something's bound to help
