DD fell on an out-stretched arm this afternoon and now she has tenderness/pain in this area. Wondering if I need to take her to A&E for an xray in the morning Sad

Yes, I would if I were you. Scaphoid fractures can be tricky to heal

Ghoulfriend · 28/10/2010 21:52

That's what I thought, should have taken her earlier Sad

My little brother did, WATCHING a game of rugby (play spilt over onto the sidelines). He needed a cast, but we teased him forever.

Don't worry - very much doubt that a delay of 12 hrs or so will make difference to the outcome. Just give her some ibuprofen

I hope she's ok.

DS did this recently. You can't always see a scaphoid fracture straight away as there are other bones in the way; but x-ray is needed to exclude other wrist fractures. If symptoms are consistent with fracture (location of pain, difficulty in some movement, holding in a neutral position), then it will be treated as such. This means plaster for c.10 days until review at fracture clinic, where they will check symptoms and re-x-ray if needed (the calcification of new bone growth should be showing up by then).

It took us 3 hours end-to-end in weekend A&E: this included a full child protection interview as we only took him when it was still hurting the day following the injury.

Onimolap is right because of the swelling, the location and the size of the bone you can?t see on x-ray if it?s broken straight away
I would take her to be safe, because at least they can and will splint it.
And go now rather than later, chances are (unless things have changes hugely) they?ll want to get you in and out as soon as poss as it?s Friday!

Yes, this is the classic way to break the scaphoid ? all of mine have done this at one time or other, putting an arm out to break a fall then putting their weight through it.

Agree with the medical advice above: splint for 7-10 days then hard cast for 2-3 weeks if it is fractured.

CrazyPlateLady · 29/10/2010 20:14

I fell out of a taxi after having my drink spiked and after a few weeks noticed pain in my scaphoid getting much worse.

I did have an xray etc but it wasn't fractured. Took weeks and weeks to heal though and was really painful.

It is best to get it checked but I'm sure it needs to be over something like 10 days before they would be able to see a fracture.

Very important to diagnose this fracture as untreated part of the bone can die. Need specific SCAPHOID views on x-ray and proper follow-up.

Good luck.

No pain this morning and after DH and I delved deeper into our medical text books we found out that the scaphiod is mostly cartilage until it fully develops at the age of 12. Very unlikely (although not impossible) to break at her age. Anyway with the lack of pain this morning and a quick prod and poke decided not to take her to a&e. She's been playing all day without a hint of pain.

Thanks for all your comments/advice Smile
