Any experience of shingles, please?

I have it on my face, and around my eye...so I'm on Acyclovir and Zovirax eye ointment.

The rash (which started on Thursday) is improving, and not blistering - but I am utterly exhausted and have throat ulcers and shooting pains in my neck and ear, especially in the evenings. I also have pea sized swollen nodes in my neck and collarbone area - is this normal?

Its all very weird, I don't know what to expect next or how to manage half term Confused

We were meant to be in Venice Sad

Any experiences would help!

Hi Elibean - me again, trying to think of anything else that might help.

I had the pains in neck and ear. also more in evenings. No throat ulcers though. With me I had about 3 weeks of fairly severe pain when the nerves were firing off all the time. (sorry you probably didn't want to know thatSad) and about six weeks to get back to something like normal.

I think I suggested something cool on your head, I also tried aloe vera gel (from health store) and aqueous + calamine on the general area (maybe easier for me because I had no hair at the time, but the aloe vera is reasonably invisible) - they helped a little bit.

Try to keep as cool as possible - have you got a fan you can use at night to keep your head and face cool?

Keep yourself well topped up with pain killers - use paracetamol and aspirin/nurofen in between and if that doesn't work ask GP for something stronger.

Feeling generally poorly with it (temperature)lasted about 1 week- ten days with me. IIRC.

Try to get lots of rest - if possible over 1/2 term. Keep an eye on it round your eye - I expect the GP has told you about that - any sign of eye problems, go to GP as emergency, or a and e if out of hours. IIRC I was told that it is problematic if it goes to the end of your nose, as it has to pass through the optic nerve. Don't panic, but do be vigilant.

Mine was just over a year ago - its cleared up fairly well, but I do still get twinges in my head occasionally, but not to the point of it being a real problem.

Sorry its not terribly cheerful - but yours may get better quicker, - I was immune compromised at the time - if you are generally healthy, you may well throw it off more quickly. I hope so. Really Sad you missed your holiday, what a disappointment, hope you're feeling better soon.

Yikes Sad

But thank you both very much for taking time. It does help to 'let myself off the hook' which I'm very bad at (probably why I got so run down in the first place, that and moving house...). I just napped, which is something I simply can't do when well!

Kurri, you're a darling for listing all that - thank you. I know about watching for spots on the tip of my nose (none yet, and no new ones today - but do have them on my eyelid and eyebrow) and the eye part was the final straw convincing us not to travel. One of the GPs, would you believe, actually told me to go ahead - wear sunglasses and put my feet up when there Shock I'm so glad I didn't, am utterly washed out.

I'm taking codydramol in the evening/night, OTC stuff the rest of the time.

Rash no longer painful, apart from eyelid - but shooting pains in neck and head seem unrelated to rash, so its good to know thats 'normal'!

Much appreciate the support, xxx

By shooting pains, do you mean it feels like needles going in very deeply? That's what I felt when I had shingles. It's because the rash is along a nerve line (or so I was told.) Very, very painful.

I found the worst though was after - it took 9 months before I felt normal - I was just exhausted all the time.

Hope you feel better soon.

Elibean · 26/10/2010 09:38

Thanks, atswim...'shooting pains' do feel like nerve pain, but as I have/had a stiff neck on one side it might be something to do with that. Not needle-like, really. I also have huge raised glands behind my left ear (shingles side) and ulcers in my throat - possibly to do with that! I suppose all same virus family.

Rash is a lot, lot better already and barely blistered Shock

But you are all right about the exhaustion. dds had friends over for picnic-y lunch, the mum was here too, I barely did a thing but was shattered afterwards and still am this morning Sad

Try to take it easy Elibean - I know it's hard with young DC, but get as much rest as you can. I think the anti-virals are pretty good for the rash, it's good it hasn't blistered. Hope you're feeling better soon, it's a nasty thing to get.Sad

If you were due in venice yesterday it was high water , very strong winds and rain so you would have been stuck in your hotel anyway ......( Trying to make you feel better)
I had shingles this summer but lower back and hip and just have huge sympathy.
