Anyone on the mini pill?

BigChiefWalnut · 22/10/2010 21:14

I started it 10 days ago and am feeling a bit unsure.

For the first week i had constant bad period cramps. Then 3 days ago my period came (when it was due) and it is extremly heavy and sore. I know i have only just started on it and i need to be paitient...

Anyone have any positive mini pill experience? Or have i had a taste of things to come Confused

Bumping for you. Watching with interest, just started the mini pill myself yesterday.

which one is it? I had fortnightly periods with femulen and micronor and ended up on cerazette which has stopped my periods completely. There are 4 types of mini pill so if one doesnt suit you can try a different one.

mini-pills

I am on cerazette and I havent had a period in months, thinking of coming of it though :)

alfabetty · 23/10/2010 09:39

Mine took a while to settle down, and I still get the odd very heavy period, or few weeks of light bleeding on & off, but most months are OK.

It was definitely worse at the beginning (constant spotting, heavy periods, missed periods etc - went through several pregnancy tests!), and my doctor told me to persevere for a few months to see if it settled.

I've been on micronor for about 18 months.

TryLikingClarity · 23/10/2010 21:23

I went on Cerazette at my 8 week check after having DS. He's now 8 months old and I still haven't had a period! I get the odd twinge sometimes but never have any blood.

I went to GP to ask why there was no blood. He said it may be cuz I am still bfing DS or it may be the mini pill.

Tbh, I'm enjoying being on it: no side effects, I'm not pregnant and no periods. Result!

BigChiefWalnut · 23/10/2010 22:34

I'm on micronor. I wanted the carazette one as you get a longer window to take it in but my doctor said he didn't think enough research had been done on taking it while breastfeeding. I don't think that is the general opinion though, everything seems to say it is fine.

I guess i'll just stick at it for a few months, see if it settles down.

Just realised while i was typing this that i forgot to take it this morning. Think i need to set an alarm.

Jst looked at that link and am shocked by the bit about weight. I used the mini pill for about 9 years in total and never had any issues at all with pregnancy. I got pregnant twice in that time when I wanted to and not at all when I didn't! At no time was it suggested that my weight was a contra-indication. How odd. I wonder if that is a new thing?

BigChiefWalnut · 23/10/2010 23:01

My doctor mentioned it to me about the weight. He said something about it not being as good for people over 11 stone (i'm 9 so not a concern) I did ask ALOT of questions about it though, so i think he just had to tell me everything he knew.

I've been on Cerazette (for endometriosis management) since June and haven't had a period since. Feel ok generally, but am hanging onto @ 7lb that I don't have when not on it. Has also totally killed my sex drive Sad

Not sure if I have any alternatives though, have already tried loestrol (sp).

NothereisnobodylurkingbehindU · 23/10/2010 23:33

11 stone! I was over that when first prescribed it! Weirdly it didn't say anything about weight in the info leaflet. Dh and I are now counting our blessings Grin All academic now as dh stepped up bless him Grin

TryLikingClarity · 24/10/2010 07:27

Why 11 stone? Just out of curiosity I'm asking. If the woman was tall then 11 stone wouldn't be overweight.

Interesting.

Seona1973 · 24/10/2010 07:52

I am over 15 stone and cerazette has been working ok for me

BigChiefWalnut · 24/10/2010 14:10

It explains it on the link seona posted about the weight, this is what it says:

"Obviously, the mini-Pill is not a great idea for you if:

* you're not very good at taking tablets regularly
* you're in a job - like being part of an airline crew - where hours are irregular and disrupted.

Also, if you?re significantly overweight (and particularly if you?re over 11 stone ? that?s 70 kg), the POP may not be effective enough for you.

If you?re determined to try the POP, then Cerazette would probably be your best choice. Alternatively, a few doctors are willing to prescribe two mini-Pills per day for larger women. But very big people (over, say, 16-and-a-half stone ? that?s 105 kg) really shouldn?t try the mini-Pill at all in my view, because the risks of falling pregnant are probably too great."

It isn't saying 11 stone is overweight. I am 5'10" so for me 11 stone would be a healthy weight for my height but it would (accordint to the above) make the mini pill less effective.

I'm almost 11 stone and tall too Confused

I will have to quiz DH on this (he's a GP).

Is an interesting point though.

I had heard from DH that many GPs are now pushing towards offering women longer-lasting birth control, such as the implant, as it's more cost effective. Don't know if that's true all over the UK though.

Woodlands · 24/10/2010 20:08

I'm on Cerazette while bfing my 3 month old DS. I bled for the first week or two of taking it, but since then (for the last 5 weeks or so) all has been fine - no bleeding or anything. TBH I have read that exclusive breastfeeding is 99.5% effective as a contraceptive so am not totally sure I need it, but better to be safe than sorry.

The doctor did mention that there was another mini pill she could not prescribe as I was over 70kg (am 5'9" so again this isn't an unhealthy weight for me; my BMI at the time was about 26, and this was at my 6 week check), or at least if she had prescribed it I would have had to take 2 pills each day.

TryLikingClarity · 25/10/2010 08:09

Yeah, I spoke to DH last night. He said that Cerazette is fine, but another type of mini pill isn't recommended for women over 70kgs.
