I have thrush at the moment, well I think its thrush, I get it usually when I go on holiday in the hot weather etc etc.

But last week I had the symptoms, saw the doctor who thought it might be an infection and have me antiboitics, it didn't get better so suggested a oral pill, I took it, felt better for 2 days and now its back and driving me nuts.

What should I do, get another pill, as I have now finished the course of antibiotics, and while I took last pill was still on them.

4 day wait to see my doctor.

pessaries are definitely the way to go. if it is thrush, antibiotics will have made it worse...

moozoboozo · 13/09/2005 18:49

I'd get the Canesten combit stuff with the pessary, as that has always worked for me. Also, natural youghurt on a sanitary towel will help to alleviate any symptoms.

bouncy · 13/09/2005 18:50

oh and if its relevent, for the past 2 weeks I have been super healthy dieting, making sure I have 5 fruit and vedge a day etc etc, could it be caused by the new diet?

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 13/09/2005 18:51

doubt the diet caused it. i eat loads & loads of f&v, & only got thrush when pg+on antibiotics.

spidermama · 13/09/2005 18:52

I'm surprised he/she gave you antibiotics as they can cause thrush.
Eat and slap on loads of live yogurt. Cut all sugar and yeast from your diet for the time being. Thrush is a yeast infection and thrives on these things so you need to deprive it.
Take probiotic regularly (from health food shop).

Finally, this worked for me when everything else had failed, though I'm aware it sounds a little offbeat ..... Put a few drops of tea tree oil in a garlic clove, thread some cotton through the clove, stick it inside over night leaving thread hanging for retrieval in the morning.

Good luck.

spidermama · 13/09/2005 18:53

Fruit is sugary so I think the combination of antibiotics and lots of sugary fruit may well have made it worse.

Aero · 13/09/2005 19:00

I suspect that any good the fluconozole tablet did you was counteracted by the anti-biotics. I've taken one of these today as I got thrush after swimming on Sunday morning! Obviously it might not have been caused by the water, but quite a co-incidence it should rear it's irritating little head several hours after!
Think I'd go for the pessary in your case and also buy some acidophilus capsules to take regularly if you're prone to getting it often.

bouncy · 13/09/2005 21:16

Thanks all.

I did forget to mention that my sister in law had thrush on holiday and was given some pills that you insert vaginally, she had one left so I had that and it didn't have any effect other than to be quite annoying while it dissoved and broke away.

Think the pill is a lot easier, does anyone know what the canestan duo consists of, it is a pill and cream?

OP posts:
Joley · 13/09/2005 21:20

Canestan Duo can be either cream and tablet or cream and pessery, they do both.

bouncy · 13/09/2005 21:23

Thanks, I will be there at the chemist waiting for them to open in the morning.

Does anyone else get really irratable with it, I am snapping at ds and dp, as I feel uncomfortable.

OP posts:
jalopy · 13/09/2005 21:24

I find that alcohol especially wine can make it worse. Seems to alter the ph down below.

dinosaur · 13/09/2005 21:25

I was plagued with thrush for ages when I was younger.

I eventually went to my GP (after months of attempting to treat it by eating loads of natural yogurt etc) and she gave me something to take internally which really did the trick.

Good luck! It's horrible.

dinny · 13/09/2005 21:25

Agree with Spidermama, garlic clove is an excellent remedy. As is cutting all sugar from diet. And try Multibillionacidophilus probiotic by Bioforce.

Antibiotics never fail to give me thrush. But maybe go to a GUM clinic to get checked out if it won't shift.

dinny · 13/09/2005 21:28

it's horrifc, Bouncy. have read that you can be more prone to it after having children (true in my case!).

I take it you do all the obvious things likme avoiding tight mylon underwear??

oh, when I kept getting it when pg with ds, a few drops of lavender in bat really helped (though have read it's best NOT to have baths if you are prone to thrush. Just showers and NO detergents.)

dinny · 13/09/2005 21:28

pmsl - in BATH, not in BAT (fnar fnar!)

myturn · 13/09/2005 21:29

Absolutely NO detergents, soaps.....

bouncy · 14/09/2005 19:27

Thanks for your wonderful advice as always.

I got the canestan duo today, cream and pill, I took the pill this morning, and used the cream although cream seemed ok for 30 mins or so. how long does the pill usually take to work? I know it says a few days, but I sure when I used it before it clears up within 24 hours.

Decided if it no better Friday I will go up the clinic.

Hi Bouncy,
You have my sympathies I've had thrush/candida for 8 weeks now and it's been AWFUL. I've had a vaginal pessary called Gyno-Peveril from my GP which has been ok but the Canestan combi I had tried prior to that just burned like hell.

Spidermama is absolutely right with her suggestions and here's a bit more should you want it!

I'm now on day 11 of an exclusion diet to try to help things along. Basically you're looking to have a diet low in yeast, sugar (particularly
refined sugar - natural fruit sugar not so bad - can get something in bigger
supermarkets called Fruitsana which is a great alternative), alcohol and
refined carbohydrates and to introduce a range of nutritional supplements.
In your case, unless the C continues to cause big problems I wouldn't worry
about a total exclusion diet - just go easy.

Candida can apparently cause bloated stomach, sugar cravings, fatigue, sore and itchy
bits and bobs, sore throat, digestive disturbances, wind, PMT, cystitis,
hormonal irregularities, food intolerances, skin problems, alcohol intolerance, bad breath, nail infections, mood swings, unexplained muscle
pain or aches in joints, weight fluctuations and foggy brain!!

Main supplements to your diet:
Probiotics - best acidophillus supposed to be Biocare - I use Quest and find
it good enough
Caprylic acid (anti fungal) - also eat lots of Garlic or take capsules
because that's a natural antifungal
Digestive enzymes (if struggling at all with digestion)

Local treatment:
One part apple cider vinegar, three parts water (pref water that has been
boiled and allowed to cool), several drops Tea Tree, Lavendar and Rosemary
oils - amount obviously depends on how much water used. Just pour it over area or get large syringe or meat baster (!!) and
actually swilling out entire area - so charming Another suggestion is that after a
week or so of this treatment, take an acidophillus capsule, prick holes in
it and insert.

Boiled water with added fresh lemon juice also supposed to be really good first thing in the morning before anything else - don't know if it actually makes a difference but you sure feel healthy doing it! Olive oil good inside (you can use olive oil on a cotton wool ball to keep the area clean) and out so lots of salads with a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and crushed garlic are great and to be honest pretty delicious. Pulses also really good.

Hope this helps
